okay so i went and exchanged those for two 0.1uf 250 volt caps. i figure ill just chain them together for 500 volts. can you refresh my memory if i want to increase voltage do i run them in parallel or series? also do you think that will work?

Most of those type diacs are used to trigger triacs in a light dimmer. As such they have a typical breakover voltage of somewhere between 6 and 20 volts.
