To be honest, you might try some cheaper brands first, the more expensive brands are made to break easier on contact so they tend to break in the chamber easier. I have a long barrel as I'm a sharpshooter but that requires more of a push to get the speed so I have to ramp up the pressure some. I used some $40/1000rnd paint and broke about every other shot. Switched to Tactical performance for half the price and haven't broken one since.

Well I guess I will be experimenting for awhile, but for now I want to get my gun, which is a prototype, working semi decently and then redo the gun with any new changes.

Sounds like a plan, I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Well as of now I am waiting on some screws to arrive and then my bolt section will be done. I have a 1 inch sprinkler valve to test it with and while I am working on testing, I am also building a 1 inch piston to power the gun, which will be housed in an old 10/22 stock. Hopefully be able to show pictures next week.

About paintballs, they slightly warp and deform as the air hits them(not to mention the fill sloshing around).Freezing may work but they would have to be in a barrel that is very tight.Generally the faster the ball flies the more it warps and the less accurate it is.

you can't actually freeze a paintball, it makes them more brittle too.

Most paintballs fail because of the bolt hitting the ball too hard, not because of the pressure exerted on them. Also if you are firing faster than the ball can enter the chamber the ball will get cut in half by the bolt, this is known as "chopping balls."

You will want to buy the balls with the thickes shell you can find!
If the shell is to thin they break under less pressure.
