Model rockets

A friend and I are having a 2 week build off to a range competition, reading through the forms I found many people suggesting darts or golf balls. Well I have a 1in barrel and can’t fit a golf ball so... maybe a model rocket with spring loaded fins would work. It can be easily made for the most part, and its consistent. The front end can be weighted, and the rear will be without the motor mount to make room for the fins. Has anyone tried or even thought of this?

I’m more referring to the type you could get from Estes. As for the pvc rockets (assuming you mean the type demoed by spudtech), maybe you could replace the end cap with a nose cone?

Yea, that could work. You can flair the end of the pvc instead of using fins. The thing about using Estes rockets is they are cardboard and you wont get many shots out of them compaired to pvc.

You could also conceivably pack a PVC rocket with a reusable parachute system.

I think that the end was flared because otherwise the pvc rocket would be tilted in the barrel due to the larger diameter of the end cap as compared to the pipe. if I use the nose cone I will have a similar problem with the flair instead of the end cap. I think I will end up using the spring loaded fins with a pvc body and a nose cone. This will be interesting to fire! XD
The idea is not to make it recoverable but to have a larger caliber dart than a nail that is streamlined and stable. I originally went with model rockets because they are designed to efficiently fly through air, the nose cone is smooth with the body, and they would be cheap and easy to build; but I like the idea of making a pvc version.paaiyan wrote:You could also conceivably pack a PVC rocket with a reusable parachute system.

i have shot a model rocket out of my inline, it didn't go nearly as far as a golf ball,t he rockets weigh a lot more
ball-at least 200ft
rocket- 20-30ft.
but try bouncy balls, they work really well too, my paintball pnuematic shoots them about 100 ft, on a 1ft 1inch chamber at 60psi

I would love to have an official range contest. I know just the place to go, for me at least. The dry lake bed at Calico California. Thats about the only place big enough where I will be able to find a golf ball or whatever I shoot out of the cannon. I would make the long drive out there for the competition. I think this would be tons of fun.
