When I got my first compressor (literally from a fridge that had been dumped in a field) that's exactly what it did, I figured that's why it had been thrown out.
Anybody else using these compressors for around 800 psi?
And if this is not my answer for an 800-1000psi air compressor, does anybody have any suggestions for building something that is?
I think the best solution is to cascade two or three fridge compressors. A lot more bulky, granted, but each individual compressor will only be stresses in the 350-500 psi range so the longevity of the setup is much more likely.

to me it sounds like your starting cap is dead.

D-d-d-ditto. That seems to be about the most common problem with compressors in the real world, doing their intended job, at least as far as I've seen.

However, I'm not sure what the point of diagnosis is? Just head back to the junkyard and hack another couple out. :)

If the motor is running, but can't build any pressure, there are only a few things it can be. Leaking piston, Leaking valves, Leaking head gasket. Probable causes are overpressure (gaskets and maybe bent reed valves) Dirt, (valve seals) Moisure, (rusted valves) or other related failure.

Without taking it apart, there is not too many easy ways to test. Vavles can be tested by adding pressure to the output port and seeing if air can go through backwards.. If the outlet valve holds pressure, then the pumping components ahead of the valve is bad, either a piston or head gasket. If the valve leaks down, the valve is bad.

Putting pressure on the outport will not tell you what is wrong.

It could be the head gasket or the valves.
You wouldn't be able to tell.

I wrecked two fridgies and my current one could die on me just as easy.
They aren't built to do what we do with them...so

The one I have now hasn't let me down yet and I have had it at 1000psi a couple of times, plus I have filled a BIG CO2 extinguisher to about 700 psi numerous times.

I have taken apart both broken compressors and was unable to fix the issue.
One had a bad valve, the other was probably down due to electrical problems caused by the axle being almost stuck. It was hard to turn.

Don't put too much effort into reviving a dead fridgy...just get a new one

Oil it well and after using it have it run a couple of minutes with the system ( bleedvalve) open so the engine can cool down.

You can have a blown head gasket and good reed valves. It will hold back pressure even though it can't pump pressure.

O.K. Guys I threw the old compressor away. A neighbor was throwing out 2 old fridges so I got the compressors out of them. And I think this is really funny, there was an argument in a thread somewhere in Spudfiles a while back about using fans to cool the compressors and if it would even help, well both fridges had a fan installed to cool the compressor

I got one compressor that looks like a typical normal looking compressor and it works fine, the other compressor is a cylinder about 3.5" dia. x 10" tall. well it is very low on oil so I hooked it up electrically and plugged it in and all it did was hum, I guess the piston was stuck, it was not turning, it did this till the thermal thing kicked on and turned it off. I did this 2 or 3 times and it finally started spinning, but you could tell it was pretty dry inside cause it was noisy and sounded rough and a lot of oil sprayed out with the refridgerent gas when I cut the copper lines.

So does anybody know what kind of oil is in these compressors and how can I refill it? And how do I know when it has enough?
I figuered I could turn the compressor on and let the inlet suck the oil in.

Looking good, I would still have the lid on and have the opposite end of the box ventilated, in order to create a duct which would increase airflow over the compressor.

You can probably use an oil for air compressors

Find the data sheet and check. You'd probably have to check its mass too and then weight it... if it is 300mg lighter than it should be then you have to add 300mg of oil
I figured I could turn the compressor on and let the inlet suck the oil in
That's how I do it

yeah I just finished the lid today and will install it hopefully on Monday.
I guess it would be better to vent the opposite side, I thought I would mount the lid on 3/4" spacers so that it will vent out the top.

good idea to check the weight of the compressor and add oil till it gets to that weight.

You guys reckon it would be fine to use 10w 40 motor oil?

10W-40 will probably be just fine. Just don't ever use the evil WD-40.

It's more than oil,it's liquid engineering so its got to be fine :D
