I would counterweight the rocket by filling the nose cone with clay or something easy to pack in there to that it flies straighter out of the barrel

Don't fill the nosecone with clay as it'll make it nose heavy and even more likely to tumble/point down before ignition making it extremely dangerous (I personally can't believe PC Guy allowed it....Once you open the door.....)

C'mon it's not in anyones benefit for spudfiles to support pyro/cannon combos, it's meant to promote safe practice.

I won't go on about it again but I am strongly in favour of the plain old no pyro projectile rule being upheld and underlined.

well, getting back to legality.....I contacted my local ATF office about my spudgun. I was worried if I gat picked up for it I would loose my CCW Permit. They told me that they(potato guns) are not illegal so long as they are used for launching potatos for "recreational" reasons. There may some local laws that limit their use though. I was told to contact my state's(Ohio) Attorney General but they hung up on me. It wasn't a bad connection, I called twice.

If I were to mention to them pyro/cannon combos or homemade rocket launchers they would probably raid my house or worse. Can you imagine Lowes or Home Depot requiring I.D. to buy PVC?

If it's a proper store bought rocket and it's legal in the US or the country you are shooting it, I see no problem.

If it's homemade and/or illegal in the country you are shooting it, it shouldn't be allowed.

I know for a fact here in Australia anything like that would come under anti-terriost laws and you can get owened big time for that type a S@%T.

I assume that old mate lives in the US and you guys invented these new laws so hey do what you will. If you get caught dont come into this forum crying from the state penatentury.

I would hate to turn on the news and see my favort forum splased on the news having terriost links or even seeing any of the mods being led by police in hand cuffs.

I think there are tons of safety considerations to think about with a topic like this. As far as stability goes, one could pack a small drag chute behind the rocket that would open upon being fired from the cannon. I'm just talking about enough drag to make sure the tail end stays where it's supposed to be. Install it in such a way that when the motor ignites, the tethers are burned away. As for ignition timing, you'd have to do the calculus to find the point at which it stops accelerating and be sure to ignite before then. And give yourself a safety net there, ignite early.

Obviously this is a dangerous thing to do, but so is pressurizing flammable gas and oxygen in a sealed container and launching a ball bearing at supersonic speeds if you think about it. I think what is really needed is some good discussion of all the issues by the mods and experienced members.

As far as bad press goes, I have to say pretty much any site on the internet that discusses and/or sells anything remotely dangerous is open to that.

If you and ya mate are into amiture rockiteering....Would the aim of the gam be to see how high you could get unassisted? So one would presume if your trying to go higher you'd build a bigger rocket.....experiment with fuels......stuff like that?

Ok and now im going to bust the theory wide open and let you in on a little history........

During the 1960's NASA investigated in ways to get satellites into orbit in more cost effective way.
Cant remember the blokes name but this guy came up with the idear that you could blast satellites into orbit with a huge F@&K off cannon.(Barrel was supposed to be like a mile long)
NASA looked into what this bloke had to say and came to the conclusion that he was crack pot and it was sooooo not worth building this huge cannon, and ended up going with the space shuttle program.

This bloke then went and had a chat with the now deceased Saddum Hussain who thort this blokes idear had some merit.
How ever old mate Saddum wasn't really interested in launching sattililes into space, more like the thort he could sent a rather large projectile (the size of a voltswagen beetle) over the horizon and blow up something in his neibors back yard. ie Quate.

When old mate found out what old Saddum was up to he pulled the pin when home and committed suicide, realising his lifes work was a waste of time.

SO mate if NASA thort it was a bad idear.....I think you should to.

Like spud gunners mate i sapose its every spud gunner dream to superseed performance of a mass produced fire arm using avalible materials? Plus it happens to be fun watching things go bang and targets get smashed by something you built at home? (Good stress releif)

Now by using the cannon to get that what 100 foot extra at a reasonable risk of falure, ie damage to property, ones self or others or the damn thing exploding with out result? (waisting up to $150)

Wouldnt that be classed as cheating?

I believe most storebought rockets are designed so that the change in weight from the burning engine doesn't offset the center of gravity to the point where the rocket changes course.

I read a technical manual on model rocketry (put out my Estes), which outlined how to test a rocket for stability (tie a string to the nose cone and swing it around), and to add bits of clay if it needs balancing. I'll assume their premade ones come pre-balanced.

I once just got a really small rocket and put a C6-6 engine inside of it...thing flew into a cloud.
