Cable connected projectiles

Two barrels, running parallel or pointed slighty apart. Each loaded with a weighted projectile. Connecting the two projectiles is a cable of some sort. When fired simultaneously, the two weights connected by the cable are propelled outward and will wrap themselves a target if aimed correctly. (trip someone, wrap around a tree, etc.)

I might build it, of course you guys have all the ideas.

I was unsure on one thing: Should the barrels run prarallel or be pointed slightly apart?

Run them prarallel. Something is telling me move the barrels as close together as you can????

I agree with jrrdw... The closer they are, the less room for error

I suggest porting one barrel slightly so that one end of the projectile moves faster than the other and sets it spinning like one would if you were to throw it.

Man, that's downright medieval... :)

You may have to test it to find the best barrel config. I wonder that if the barrels are too close and parallel, you might risk the cable twisting up on itself as it flys...especially if the projectiles spin coming out of the barrels. Edit: perhaps you could attach the cable to the projectiles using fishing swivels. That would keep some of the cable twisting down.

The idea, I think anyway, would be to have to projectiles split out wide so as to cover as much horizontal space as possible before it hits and wraps its target. If you keep the projectiles close, it's doubtful if they will split at all.

So I vote for keeping somewhat separate, slightly angled apart. Maybe 6-8" at the muzzle, 3-4" at the breech. Really depends on total barrel length and how soon you want it to be effect on your target.

reminds me of the 2 cannonballs and chain thing that the pirates put in the cannon in pirates of the carribean, took out the mast of the other ship, wonder what kind of damage a pneumatic one could do

A bolo? Is that the word?
You could use to to cut the rigging down on sailing ships

I've been dreaming of making one of these for some time, but I'm broke.

I would go with saying to test out different barrel configs, but you're best bet is to basically put them right next to each other or really close.

Also, sjog mentioned a bola. Those work a lot better with 3+balls, so what about making a third barrel or just having a third ball hanging off the cord somewhere? Might be interesting to try out at least.

The Chain shot, as mentioned above, was 2 cannonballs connected by a chain, however, it was shot out of one barrel. Try that first, eh?

Chain shot you mean?

I thought it was with 3?

Nah, it was typically two cannonballs linked with a chain. They were commonly used to disable rigging on enemy warships, but wreak havoc on infantry as well. :)

Someone correct me if my thinking is wrong, but wouldn't angling the barrels outward cause a "messy" flight? Imagine the two projectiles on a table connected by a string. If you slide them apart quickly, they should "bounce" back towards each other once the string is taught. Wouldn't this same effect happen with angled barrels? I suppose if the barrels weren't angled too much, the "bouncing" wouldn't be as great though.

Just a thought, what do yall think?

My thought is: If it's only firing two weights with a cable between them ,
you'd probably get the same effect (of however it will fly) out of one barrel.

kind of like a shotgun if it's only got two pellets in the shell, they will still spread out and fly just as erraticaly from one barrel as two.

here's a multiple barrel concept that could probably be adapted to fire a net though:

I've tried firing two nuts joined by a cable from one barrel and it didn''t work well. every time after leaving the barrel the amo extended in a wrong way - that is parralel - not perpendicular to the direction of movement... I hope you get the idea

I think that judgment_arms is right - >
