Building a sniper stock

Hey guys, i'm building the stock for my airsoft sniper project and i'm trying to inlay the co2/reg/chamber/valve inbetween two peices of 1x6 oakwood, so when i put the two boards together all the components lie in between and there is not gap down the center. Needless to say it's alot of work, and i was thinking about instead of chiselling away for all these complex shapes maybe i could cut my work time by reshaping the components with some kind of epoxy putty or something, so that they would be uniformly square-shaped instead, which would make the inlay MUCH simpler and quicker, and probably better because there would be less chance for the components to wiggle inside the stock from an imperfect chiselling job.... Here's a picture to show you what i mean. The blue part is a rough outline of where i want the parameters of the stock, and the red line is what i might reshape the components to be like. My question is this---- What material should i use to reshape the components??? Would a bunch of plumber's epoxy work or is there anything better?

I was thinking maybe you could use ridged foam for your stock .Its easy to shape and its cheap. After you have the stock all carved out harden it with fiberglass cloth and resin. You can get that stuff at any auto store. You might even be able to use bondo and fiber glass. Sand it smooth and paint. It will look KICK ASS. :thumbup:

I have no idea but from what your outlining, I guess you'll have to create some sort of "shell" to put around ur gun... something like what nivek said, but don't cover what ever you going to put on around that stock area. I think you should go find an acheapo LPEG Aug Steyr and use that as a stock.

Btw how many shot before the co2 runs out?

ya i thought about foam but im thinking of something i can apply like a spread then shape it, something more like bondo, then the stock is oak like i mentioned. Is bondo easy stuff to work with? Like is it really wet and drippy or more like clay consistency? I need something easy to work with like plumber's epoxy or something like that. Remember, you won't be seeing this stuff, the outside of everything will be covered with the oakwood, so the squared off components will be inlayed as well and will not be exposed so i probably will not waste time painting it.

I'm making a shell that squares the round components in the gun (red line in picture) so that chiselling my inlay in the oakwood stock peices will be much easier. I don't want to use a different stock because this stock is being specially modelled from the sniper rifle in Halo 3. As for # of shots with the co2, it depends on what psi i shoot at, but until i am done testing thoroughly i'd say a ballpark range is anywhere between 20-40 shots anywhere between 80-140 psi each shot.

Yeah, bondo is kinda soupy. Its not like puddy at all. If you were to use plumbers puddy to do all that, thats alot of puddy. That will come to alot of $$$$. Unless you can find a place that sells in bulk. Have you thought about using a router with a plunging cutting bit, set to a certin depth..If you dont have one you can rent them. Im not a professional wood worker but thats what I would do. Cut out a channel in the wood for the guts of the gun.

Hmm, even though It would take some work, I would take time and make a wooden stock and make it look good. The way your gun is layed out makes me think that the gun would look ALOT better with a painted wooden stock maybe in the shape of a AUG. Or maybe since its a sniper, try looking at the L96-AW or SAS-R for stock ideas. I will forever envy you if you can do that XD

Ya, i already planned that after i got done doing the inlay i would shape/sand the outside of the stock til it's close to perfect then paint it a nice gun color, all the components, including the MAGAZINE will be painted, here's a little spoiler shot on how things are going with just a few of the other handmade features on the gun but i'm not showing much cause i don't wanna give away all the goodies 8) .... this gun will turn out so sick, i'm telling you. And just to make everything clear, i'm not using foam for anything, not even the stock, i am only using wood for the stock, what my question was is i need a material to put on the components and to be able to reshape the components squarelike so that i can make a squarelike inlay which is way easier than chiselling or even using a router (which i don't have and don't want to spend money renting) on all those complex round shapes because i think it will be harder to find the right depth so the components don't jiggle around in the stock.

I had to do exactly that, on my lastest cannon, and it is a pain to cut out all the shapes, takes alot of time without the right tools. (plus mine is a bullpup, so needed to fit in the magazine and release mechanism.

You could probably even use, a can of foam stuff, would make the whole thing lighter and would be quite easy to do. whoops just read through the last post again
I'm not sure if thats what you meant, but it would only be on the inside so the stock would still be wood on the outside.
