Squirrel Trap

Heres my squirrel trap that made over the weekend for about 15 bucks. Its made from 6 inch heater pipe. It works with the rabbit box notched trigger design. A squirrel goes in and eats the peanut butter off the trigger sick disloging it from the metal hole. Yes, I know its ghetto but I was making it for as cheap as possible. Note the nails covered with tape because I ran out of bolts. It works well and I caught a squirrel this morning and held it until this afternoon.

Are you hunting them or just catch-and-release? I know the forum doesn't like to talk about shooting animals... What about trapping them? Seems more inhumane to trap and detain them than to just shoot 'em dead. They taste good, but my wife isn't in to all that. If it can't be purchased at Kroger we don't eat it. Too bad, really. I thin them out and give the rewards to others.

Just wait, one out of the many you decide to catch will be a rouge squirrel and will try to take you on once it is released! Trust me.

No I catch and relocate them to the country, its safer for them as they dont get run over and dont get shot by my neighbors, its to early in the season for the to have babies so it doesnt hurt them or other squirrels, plus they tear up my familys garden and our neighbors potted plants, also I dont eat squirrels and dont believe in shooting things just for a sport

I know the forum doesn't like to talk about shooting animals...

...with spudguns. It's generally taken that spudguns are not blessed with the required mix of accuracy and energy to make a humane kill. The other issue is that we don't like to associate spudguns as being dangerous weapons.

It is generally taken that discussion of hunting with the proper tools, or of terminal ballistics from a theoretical viewpoint are acceptable topics of discussion - although they're not exactly encouraged, and should be left be if the site staff decide it has to stop.

Now, here's an interesting one for you. Here in the UK, shooting squirrels is actually more legal than using a humane trap.
If you have pests on your land, you're legally obliged to kill them. Quite a lot of people decide to ignore that law (as it's seldom enforced upon the average home-owner), but that's the way it is.

I didnt know that but since I dont live in the Uk I think its legal because you can buy havaheart traps at Lowes. Also I would much rather catch and relocate them than kill them for just being a pest.

Why build a squirrel trap for fifteen dollars when you can buy one for ten at harbor freight? My favorite way to cook squirrel is to soak it in BBQ sauce then slow cook it.


P.S. I have a new high power pellet gun made for hunting and the squirrels have destroyed my garden. Also some of the squirrels here get so freaked out when they are caught they die about a day after I release them.

You can buy humane traps in the UK - but you're still supposed to kill any (grey) squirrels you catch in them. Not that it stops people using them for illegal trap-and-release.

It's your choice, but the way I look at it, to actually take them far enough away that they're not likely to return, then you're investing quite a lot of time and fuel only to give the problem to someone else.

The thing is, the Eastern grey squirrel is not native to Britain. It was introduced in various places around the country between about 1876 and the 1920s, being a species imported from the USA.
This wasn't really a good decision, and is a mistake the law is trying to undo. Over here, they're basically a pressure on an ecosystem that hadn't developed to cope with them.

Some people object to the idea, with arguments ranging from "it's not fair on them" to "You kill them, I'll kill you", but that just means they're lucky enough not to have yet had a squirrel related problem.

Frankly, they're not far removed from rats in terms of the problems they can cause. They just have better PR (read: they look cuter).

TheGunGuy I dont have a local harbor freight and on amazon or at lowes there about 50 so I came out good for one this size, and Im not investing to much time because I just have to move them across a river or large stream and theres one not to far from my house.
