Another easy way to make mini ones is get a little lump of KNO3 and melt it, then sprinkle in sugar.

I've read that adding fine saw dust makes even more smoke. Has anyone tried that?

ahh the power or sugar. well you can turn it into a rocket if you put it into a schamber with a small opening and some guidence fins, with the right amounts of fuel that is.

There isn't. If you are playing in an area where there is a fire risk (The vast majority of fields) then you will have to go with chemical smoke, or carry a small extinguisher, and use some common sense. (Please, don't light something on fire and throw it into a field of dead wheat during 75mph winds.)

Instinct tells me that you learned that the hard way?

Question: Could the wick light from a combustion cannon?

Your instinct is very, very wrong. I am not a moron.

It depends what you mean by 'wick'
Some fuses would, and some wouldn't. You could saturate a wick with an oxidizer and it may, bu black match would probably be better.
Of course, shooting incendiary ammo is a felony in the US, and anything burning at the temp of black powder while leaving your barrel will scar it up very badly over time.
