If I was insensitive, I would make a bar graph where y axis represents number of crash injuries prevented, and the two sets of data on the x axis would be "praying" and "wearing seatbelts".It is believed that no one in Mr. Burrier's vehicle was wearing a seat belt, Lt. Crofton said.

I was in a friends car the other week not wearing a seat belt and we got stopped by a random seat-belt check at a police road block and the cop let me off
Since the trip from the ferry terminal to my house takes about a minute, on occasion I don't wear my seat belt as a passenger but the above incident has changed my thinking. Although I never drive a car without wearing a seat belt, feels really strange if I'm not wearing one and driving.
I still find it f***'d that seat belts aren't compulsory in buses, public and private.

They definitely are on buses in Spain travelling on highways, the Guardia Civil carry out random checks and if you're caught without one it's a hefty fine.MrCrowley wrote:I still find it f***'d that seat belts aren't compulsory in buses, public and private.

Cost you $250.00 in the state of Maryland as of October 1st 2010. In some cases your better off not wearing one. The driver in my accident was killed because the steering wheel held him in, myself and my brother where both ejected and we lived.
There's no way of knowing when it comes to motor vehicle wrecks until it happens.

Fair point, it won't always help (and terrible that you should have been involved in such a crash!) but going by statistics, you're much better off wearing one than not.jrrdw wrote:In some cases your better off not wearing one. Here's an argument against extra steering wheelsMrCrowley wrote:jrrdw, isn't that an argument against steering wheels and not seat belts?

A few years ago, I was driving at 55 mph on a 2 lane desert road at midnight. My car was rear-ended by a drunk in a vehicle traveling at 105 mph. My car was launched into the soft desert sand, rolled twice and landed upright. I had on the seat belt and didn't receive even a scratch. The other driver didn't use the seat belt. He went to the opposite side of the road and hit a tree. His air bag deployed when he hit me so when he got to the tree, the steering wheel was the only thing stopping him from going completely through the windshield. I'm sure doctors are still trying to reassemble his face. Seat belts work!

The odds are in favor of wearing them.jsr wrote:you're much better off wearing one than not.

Some say the steering wheel beat him to death, others say the roof collapse killed him and other, others say the thrashing around from cartwheeling 6 times end over end killed him.
The most I remember is veering across the road into the embankment, then waking up on a gurney being wheeled down the hallway of the hospital so on and so forth...
IMO the odds are that the seat belt will increase your chances of surviving a crash. In some scenario it could be worse, but not in the most often cases.
All car windshield are impact proof those days, and you skull will just open like a coconut hitting it.
Unfortunately, I know from close family both scenario, belt saving lifes and belt killing it. I still think one is better with a belt than without it.
