How are you planning to stream data from the cameras? I highly doubt your going to just shoot and hope the flash card survives....

Flash cards are quite sturdy, but if the camera screws up, the file gets corrupted, and you can't read it. But I bet with military funding, they could recover it.

That's exactly the plan. Well, more or less. We'll probaby hide it behind some ballistic glass or something, but in the general sense... The plan is indeed to set up the camera and just keep our fingers crossed.

Historically we've had customers ask to take high speed video of [stuff] and we're like, "If you've got $100k to put in an escrow account, we'll be more than happy. But understand that if the camera gets destroyed, we keep the money AND you'll get no video. We're betting that the camera will get destroyed. So... Is it worth a $100k bet to ya?" More times than not, the answer is a resounding "no" and the video simply doesn't get taken.

Now, we may be able to replace $100k with $200. I guarentee under those conditions that many people are willing to take that bet. Maybe they get video. Maybe they don't. If they get the video, GREAT! If they don't... Meh, it was only $200 and it's not like they would have gotten the video anyways.

from my experience (in my old camera/phone hacking days), flash cards don't take abuse very well (especially when coupled with heat).

I think it would atleast be worth making a fake card to bring the wires out, so you can put the card in a steel box.

I thought the higher end cameras stream via ethernet?

They'll provided standard video output for real-time monitoring of camera functions and such via ethernet, but there's no way in hell to push that much bandwidth through ethernet real-time(*).

Basically the cameras have a 100 GB (or some insane number like that) worth of ram that they store the images to. AFTER the test, you have to download the data. Typically this is done via firewire and takes 30-45 minutes depending on framerates and such....The whole time you're praying you don't have a power glitch, 'cause if you do, you lose everything (UPSs are your friend).

(*) One thing to remember is that high-end cameras do not encode to mpg or other formats that have losses...you get zero-loss video, but the result is MASSIVE file sizes. Put it this way: Our photographers typically deliver video to our customers on 500 GB hard drives (and sometimes 1 TB drives). Nothing smaller will hold it.

I think I'll be investing in one of these.

Which is better, the EX-FC100 or the EX-FS10?

edit: Just ordered the FC100 :)

Ya i think the fc100 is better jsr good call, it has zoom, better macro, image stabilization. I just got the fs10 because its smaller so I can take it with me everywhere.

btw sorry for no update on vortex vids, I just got an oxyacetelyne welder and Ive been a little preoccupied. :D

That's what I figured, less compact -> better peformance. Let's hope it arrives in one piece, this is the most expensive thing I've ordered from eBay so far *crosses appendages*
btw sorry for no update on vortex vids
No worries, hopefully I'll be able to continue your good work myself :)

edit: according to Fedex it should be here by Thursday, woo!

Not to mention that due to the somewhat larger size, the FC-100 takes a larger, higher MaH lithium battery than the FS-10 does so you will get a bit more battery life out of it.
I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be without sponges.
Right now I'm having amnesia and deja vu at the same time. I think I've forgotten this before.

I didn't consider this but good point :) it's arrived in Paris already (annoying that stuff you order seems to have better holidays  :D ) so it should arrive at the epoxy batcave by tomorrow, can't wait. I'll certainly be taking the Monsoon out for some damage videos

Hahah, speaking of holidays, my EX-FC100 came with me to Hamilton Island last week :D

Among other things, I visited the firing range they have there... I fired 25 shots through a scoped .22 rifle, 25 shots through a semi-auto .22 pistol...

And then 6 rounds with Dirty Harry's S&W model 29 .44 Magnum.... BOOM! :D :D :D

Pretty fun considering I've only ever shot a 12 gauge shotgun and a .410 shotgun previously. :D

In the coming few months, i'll visit my local range. I'll try to film weapons in high speed ;)

Just filmed 2 layers of aluminium foil acting as a burst disk on my mini combustion (no barrel)

The noise sorta caught me by surprise... I had hearing protection and knew it would be loud but it was more powerful than I expected... for a moment I thought the lid had blown off
