Well, Fnord, once you start playing its pretty hard to stop if you really like games like it. One sand box game plus tons of addons and multiplayer support = endless hours and amounts of fun trolling people.

I know, I probably put a solid 300 hours into ES4 and that wasn't even multi player 
I had the original Unreal way back when, and once I figured out how to use the level editor, I probably wasted twice that. But, it was a good way to gain a thorough understanding of how video games work.

I used to play GMod, but mostly Half-Life 1/2/2:e1/2:e2. Never played GMod online, but used to work around with lua scripts and making STools and the like.
