I am looking to find a new hobby and I thought about paintball.
I would just like to have some recommendations for a new gun(my current one is a piece of sh*t.
I have up to $300 to spend on it. and recommendations?

Are 98's and a-5's any good for speedball?
I had always related those with woodsball.
As a matter of fact I was just looking at kingmans site at those look nice, especially with those nice loaders.

Oh and these Autococker trilogies are nice with the pro model being 269$, its in my price range

Well the only thing I have experience with is my Spyder TL-R. I love it, but it's not great for speedball right off the shelf. That would take a few good mods, luckily, the gun only runs US $150 tops, and that leaves room in your budget for an electronic trigger or whatever you like. When I say 150 tops, that's getting real expensive. When I got it, it was 120 and came in a kit with two barrels, 12 oz CO2, mask, cleaning kit. You might be able to find it cheaper. It's a good reliable gun that's easy to mod. The lady I get my stuff from has the same model, but she's got an electronic trigger, no-chop bolt, new feed neck, I think a Halo B hopper, rifled barrel, the gun comes with an LP chamber so no worries there... Yea I think that's about her setup.

Autocockers are good guns. I think most use a pneumatic ram and such though instead of just being a simple blowback like a typical spyder. They use lower pressure and are (based on being a closed bolt design as opposed to open like a Spyder) more accurate. But we're talking about a time when compressed air and N2 are becoming more popular, and keep in mind that paintballs aren't exactly the ideal projectile since they aren't perfectly round.

Personally, I like a gun I can work on myself since that's most of the fun for me. I don't play, so I don't care exactly how reliabe it is. So I would say something with an eye would be good, like a Spyder VS3 or an ION. But, I don't play, so don't listen to me. Just go read reviews about guns and how they work, and go from there. Ask people at your local range what they use, and what they would suggest. But if you are just getting started, just get a Spyder Pilot ACS. It already has an E-grip, antichop delrin bolt, and will work very well. If I could go back, that's what I would have done instead of getting my Xtra and sinking money in it trying to get it to that point. And believe me, the bolt alone in the Pilot ACS makes it just a phenomenally better gun than a regular spyder. No more chopped balls.

For speedball the new Ions are the starter level gun of choice.There are even a few scenario teams who use them.Not so customizable but out of the box they perform well and look cool.You can change the plastic composite bodies and get whatever style suits your fancy.

Yes some people hate them with a passion.It mainly stems from the fact its produced by smart parts.

The obvious upgrades out of the box would be a new barrel and whatever tank and hopper you wanted.For a starter level gun its a good choice and oodles more advanced than a spyder(sorry Paaiyan).It should keep you up with the serious contenders for a while.

Well....where to start.

Autocockers are nice guns. They are very accurate (arguably the most accurate on the market), but they require a good paint to barrel match, in order to operate well. This can be acheived by a barrel kit, or searching for paint that fits your stock barrel. Most guns have ball detents, that hold the ball back. Autocockers don't. Autocockers are also restricted in the rate of fire that they can acheive (with lots of money, they can operate quickly).

All in all, autocockers are a tinkerer's gun.

I personally love tippmanns. They can be suited for speedball with a simple electronic trigger. They are all very customizable, upgradedable, and hardy. You can literally smash it off of concrete and keep playing. I have an X7, and I love it. For your price range I'd suggest an A5 with an e-grip. Fast, reliable, and versatile. If you feel like spending more, definately get an X7. It is basically a more customizable a5, with some performance enhancements.

An added plus to the A5 and X7 is that they don't require batteries for the hopper, or even a new hopper at all. Also, contrary to popular belief, the cyclone uses EXCESS gas. It doesn't use more gas.

Tippmanns are also very easy to take apart. If something breaks, you can usually rip it apart and fix it.

Ions are also very nice guns. They do require a new hopper, to handle the fast rates of fire. They are generally pretty reliable, but if they break, there is usually nothing you can do to fix it. The ion comes with an electronic trigger preinstalled. Many people like to get a new one however. With an ion, you MUST run nitrogen or HPA. CO2 is a very bad idea to run in an ion. N2/HPA tanks are much more expensive than CO2 tanks and aren't filled at every field (although most do fill them).

If you want a scenario version of the ion, you can get an SP8, which is an ion with an outer shell around it.


In conclusion:

Autocockers= lower ROF, more finicky, paint to barrel match, if taken apart can be jacked up, CO2 or HPA (HPA highly recommended)

Tippmanns: versatile, upgradable, fast ROF w/ e-grip, no new hopper needed, tough, easy to take apart, CO2 or HPA

Ion/SP8: good stock gun, needs new hopper, must run HPA, can be finicky, ball detents run out quickly

Sorry for double post, but I had a huge post before .

I'm selling a Tippmann 98 custom. It comes with an expansion chamber, e-trigger installed, new 12" Tippmann Sniper barrel, Viewloader revolution hopper w/ x-board. Hell I'll throw in the 12 oz CO2.

I'm selling all this for $250. It is in very nice condition (only been used once). I'm selling it to pay for my X7 ( I owe about $500). The trigger has been tuned so finely, that it can be bounce fired. That is, that the recoil from the gun sets off the trigger. After a little practice, the sweet spot is easy to find.

The e-trigger has 5 settings. Turbo, full-auto, auto-response, 3-shot burst, and semi. Auto-response shoots one for every pull and release of the trigger.

I bought the X7 before I played with the 98 custom, otherwise, I would've never bought the X7 and never sold the 98. It's a great gun.

Why choose speedball? Woodsball is 10x more fun. I've got a practice coming up tomorrow through Wednesday. 24 hours of woodsball maneuvers and live-fire practice! I've just never seen the type of devotion I see to woodsball in speedball.

Tippmanns are better woodsball guns, but like demilus said, with an electric trigger they are great for speedball. If you get a Tippmann, don't get an A-5. They are less customizable (is that a word?) and are too expensive for what they are.

An A-5 is usually about $300, a 98 Custom is less than half of that, and is exactly the same if you get a motorized hopper for it.

I am one of those people who hates Ions with a passion, but not because SmartParts made it. It costs $299 and only shoots 17 bps. I got a Spyder Pilot ACS '05 for $115 brand new, and it shoots 20 bps. You have to pry the grip up to change firing modes on the Ion, but with the Spyder, you just have to press a button. The only good thing about Ions is that they use LP air, so you get more shots per tank. A Spyder Pilot is an excellent starter gun if you want to get into speedball, but an A-5 or X7 is probably your best choice for woodsball.

I live in Las Vegas and their are lots of fields around here but I have yet to find anything with woodsball.
Maybe I'll look into it at a local field.


And I have been thinking about getting a A-5 with all the goods.

Don't get an A-5, it's really not worth it! It's just a 98 Custom with a motor hopper (and $150 more)!

I would definitely recommend a pump gun. If you can get a Phantom get one, you will not be disappointed. Any pump gun. An ACI maverick will do just as good and thats only $84!

Playing pump really gets you to think about what your doing more than you normally do. I love playing pump, its just so fun
