ok ive made about 2 1/2 potato guns and the first two were pretty big combustion cannons. the other 1/2 im make right now. its gunna be pneumatic sniper. ive seen many people using sprinkler valves and i was wondering what they are used for? or how they work or w/e. but i dont wanna go and waste $30 on a valve if i dont even know how to use it (im 14).
anyway can anyone tell me how to install the modified sprinkler valve (i know how to modify it) on a pneumatic cannon or what its used for. and sry for being such a newb to most of u :(

@edit: ok i searched forever and for all u newbs to sprinkler crap go to http://www.spudtech.com/content.asp?id=21 its a really great descricption of how a sprinkler valve works. also thnks to all the people who helped me and tried to explain how it works too =)

Reading some posts at "pneumatic cannon discussion" area will do wonders. "Search" button is your friend also.

That function is called piloting. Some small amount of air will be released enough to actuate the sprinkler and the bulk of the air is then quickly routed to the output of the valve. The blow gun replaces the solenoid to do that function faster...a good thing in cannon performance.

If you don't care about high performance. you could just leave the soleniod on there and trigger the cannon electrically...plenty of cannons have been made that way too.

Greenhorns…
What, do your teachers give you the answers to your math problems?
Would it kill you to spend 15 minutes to search, every last answer to your questions can be easily found.
If you’re too lazy to do some simple searching, are you to dang lazy to practice basic safety rules?

Take a look at Ceppu, he’s only got 8 posts, yet he’s given the best piece of advice in this thread.

Welcome to the forums, DaGrimRaper, hope you stick around.

edit: fixed some errors in spelling and wording...

DaGrimRaper,( )

Here at Spudfiles we provide the information and the help, we don't provide the teaching. There is no point teaching calculus to someone who doesn't understand it, they have to have a general knowledge of it.

What you need to do now is go to the Spudwiki, located top right of the page, and spend some time going through the Pneumatic Cannon Discussion and Showcase sections. It would also do you good if you look at the stickies in the How-To section on 'How-To: Mod a sprinkler valve'.

Once we know that you have some clue to how everything works, we can then help you with your design and construction.

For starters, if you live in America, a 1" sprinkler valve will cost you between $10-$15. The real purpose of a sprinkler valve is for irrigation involving pressurized water, so you should find them in the Irrigation/Plumbing section of a Home Depot.

As you can now tell, a sprinkler valve is a valve, a valve regulates or completely stops a fluid from going through a passage. In a sprinkler valve this is done by the 'diaphragm'. When you fill your chamber up with air, the air leaks through an 'equalization' hole in the diaphragm and into the 'pilot volume'. This air pressure in the pilot volume then pushes the rubber diaphragm down and seals the hole to the chamber.

So now the pressure can build up in the chamber while the diaphragm is sealed against the chamber port in the valve. A sprinkler valve usually uses a 'solenoid' to empty the pilot volume, but us Spudders find that solenoids are too slow and restrict flow, meaning the valve opens slower. You also need 3x9v batteries to operate them.

So instead we use a blow gun, this does the same job except it's pneumatic and not electric like a solenoid. When you mod the valve so the blow gun is above the pilot volume area, the valve in the blow gun holds back the pressure in the pilot volume keeping the valve sealed.

Once you press the trigger on the blow gun, it opens the valve in the blow gun, letting the air pressure in the pilot volume out, this creates an unequal force on the diaphragm, which now has pressure from the chamber pushing it up, but no pressure holding it down, so the diaphragm opens very, very quickly, letting the air out into the barrel port, and firing your projectile.

And to install the valve you just need threaded fittings which can be found at home depot.

Hope you understand everything, if not just ask.

Yeah, that’s what I was trying to say, only I couldn’t think of how to say it…

And I trust that he misspelled it (DaGrimRaper), I think this is one case when PCguy should fix the guys name.

Yeah I pretty much summed up what you were trying to get across :)

And I hope he misspelled his name, we can either chuck an 'e' in their for DaGrimReaper or we could chuck in an extra 'p' for DaGrimRapper

But seriously man do some searching. Technically i never use the search but just dig through the Foum for the info. Just look around this question has been asked numerous time probably thousands of times.

I might keep track of how many times stupid questions are asked on this forum. and....
I just realized my teachers and parents lied to me there is such a thing as a stupid question

Here's that parroting thing again, where everybody repeats the poster above them, "use the search" basicaly. I don't think he's scared off, just off doing something else.

Let us know if you get it figured out.

Welcome to Spudfiles.

On your name, did you mean to spell it with "raper" at the end? If you didn't, ask PCGUY to change it, I think this is one time where the reason is plenty good enough, that is if you miss-spelled it.
