Humphrey qe5, super qev!!!
Anybody here used them before???
Holy crap is this thing fast... It's 3/4" and using it to pilot my 4" chamber modular/toolie cannon, it is faster with a schrader valve than the 3/4" atlas qev I've got on the golfball cannon with a modded garden sprayer(and before you say it's because the pilot volume is smaller,both cannons have the same qev pilot setup, and both qevs have the exact same pilot set-up, 3/4" Tee, one leg to qev, one to the garden sprayer, and one to a reducer with a schrader for filling), I can't tell a differance in speed between piloting with the schrader or the sprayer, but I'm sure the sprayer is a hair quicker, the way I found out it would fire with the schrader is because it fired when I tried to check the filled pressure, the specs on this thing say it will work with as little as 1 psi differance between chamber and pilot... And the supply house in NC sales them for 32 USD a piece, compared to 26 usd for the atlas's from fastenal....

Ya, the McMaster ones look terrible, and are not the special design that the humphreys are. I don't know what the real difference is, and their effective operating pressures, as well as how easily the humphreys are, but the McMasters are definitely a lower quality.

The humphrey actuates with a 1 psi, pressure change, in other words even a tiny leak will cause a premature firing... As evidenced by how quick it fired merely using a schrader valve to pilot it, and approx 2.5"ci of pilot volume and 80 psi...
Rofl it looks nothing like the MCmaster ones at all, least not on the webpages. This one looks pretty sexy...

BTW- wouldn't you say "resident tinkerer" is a bit of a dumb label for yourself considering the purpose of this website and the people who frequent it? Mostly all of us here are tinkerers.

^^Its not dumb, its just repetitive, redundant, as well as stating the obvious...
Well they do look terrible. What I am talking about though is that the shuttle design of the Humphreys is specially made to increase flow and opening time, whereas the McMaster ones are a simple piston.
Looking at it the other way though, the McMaster ones are most likely far more modifiable then the Humphreys, due to how simple they are.

The more I read about the humphreys the more I like them, they did their homework, that's for sure... I have noticed that the humphreys fills faster when using the pilot as the filler... They are actually designed so that you can plug the exhaust and use it as a check valve, so they have to be designed to flow through faster...

Your fill rate is much more dependent on the rate of your compressor, or some other restriction in the fill hose, than the QEV. The nice thing about the McMaster ones is that you can open them, and make a little hole in the piston, so that you can fill from the chamber side.
