My first airgun (finally) :)

Even without o-rings, a tight fitting sleeve will have minimal air loss and the benefits in accuracy should be worth it.

I learned why I didn't do this today. It's a royal pain in the butt! I didn't think it would be such an ordeal trying to make a breech. I have tried a number of things with 5/8" pipe to try and get it to fit snugly around my barrel with minimum air escaping and still be able to slide but to no avail unfortunately.

I might grease up another 1/2" piece of copper and try to fill the void between that and some 5/8" with epoxy, but I fear the gap might be a little too small for it to flow properly.

It'd be nice to use o-rings but without a lathe it's a bit hard to put ring grooves around my barrel, and I have a feeling the action sliding back and forth will tear into them as the end of the sleeve goes off and back on to them.

I'll brainstorm (and experiment) a bit more until I find a result I'm happy with. Perhaps a ball valve with a hole drilled in the side is the way to go.

sure they are for airgun pellets, but I am sure you could replicate the first one with a drill press

Just an update here, I got my bearings in the mail today to find out that they wouldn't fit in the barrel.

After pulling the caliper out I found that the ID of the arrow shafts I bought was 5mm, not 6mm as they said it would be. (FFFUUU.jpg)

That said, I'm not going to be able to do much until I get something that actually has an ID of 6mm.

Thanks Jack, but I've got 2000 6mm balls here that I bought from eBay, I've got to use them somehow. I've ordered a 6.03mm proper airgun barrel, the seller said they'd ship it as "precision tubing" for me so I think it will get through customs with no problem.

Good luck with that, from what I hear customs on your side of the world are quite adept at spotting airsoft related items

Yes they bloody are.

Hopefully this one will go through marked as tubing, I doubt customs open every single package with a piece of tube in it to check if it's an airgun barrel, but we'll see. It was only 30 bucks which serves well as an experiment. Worst case scenario I get a letter from customs that I'll probably end up using as target practice to make me feel better.

The scope mounts are secured to a few bolts that I screwed into the stock. It's not the -best- way to do it, but it's definitely sturdy enough to not move unless the thing is dropped.

Haven't seen my barrel yet (or a letter from customs). I'm assuming it will be here next week judging by delivery times on past purchases from the area.

News!

My barrel actually came through, I'm stoked! No more trawling through ebay and hobby stores looking for reliable tubing!

I finished it today, ended up fixing the barrel, using neodymium magnets to hold the projectile (thanks JSR) and dropping the bearings down it. They take about 10 seconds to reach the bottom because it's such a tight fit but damn it's satisfying to fire, and it's bloody accurate too!

It took me a while to sight in the barrel properly, I recorded a few shots while I was doing it which I've just uploaded, I can get perfect grouping at 25 meters from a prone position, which I'm loving.

It's a bit of a dodgy video, I've pretty much edited bits and pieces into one video, sorry but it was a 15 minute job.
