Best Aerosol Fuel

Hello everyone. I am a relatively new gunner and I feel I am not sophisticated enough for any of this metered propane or butane stuff. I have done some experimenting with hairspray, right guard, and oust. Thus far the hairspray has made the most noise and shot my spuds the furthest (roughly 100 yards). The only down side is a don't like hosing out my chamber after a firing session. I was wondering if I could just get some straight answers one the best aerosol fuels. Thanks.

Metered propane is easier and cheaper than you'd think, and IMHO, it's by far the best combustion spudgun fuel.

If you want to keep using aerosol fuels for awhile, try car starter fluid (which contains ether). I've also used engine degreaser (which leaves a bit of a film, but is very powerful). Pure alcohol in a spray bottle works well if you can get it to ignite, but it's finicky.

Just try to avoid stuff that gunks up the inside of your chamber (like hairspray or deodorant). Anything that's actually MADE to be combusted (such as propane, butane, and car starter fluid) will work best.

I heard some stuff about Starter Fluid, but it kinda intimidates me because of its power. Any recomendation on how much to use?

Try a 1/4-second long spray and work up from there.

If you don't want metered propane just get a torch head and a bottle of propane and just guess the amount of propane to use. Propane is a lot cheaper then aerosol fuels too, probably like .05 cents a shot.

There's no reason to be intimidated by starting fluid. It is powerful, but nowhere near powerful to affect a chamber in a damaging way.

Try using very small amounts but not because less is less powerful, in fact it gives a better combustion. By spraying too much, you decrease the oxygen content in the chamber and there is a smaller combustion. It takes a lot less than you may think.

If you live in Australia or thereabouts a deodorant called "Dry Idea" and Lynx Deodorant mixed together work extremely well.

Edit- Word of advice, Potato Launcher". Don't dig up dead posts this post is approx. a year old, A mod will verbally-rape you if you do this, and so will everyone else.

I think Oust is really good.
But I use Lysol, which is ridiculous since it's 80% ethanol

You really should completely forget anyone ever told you about any fuel that has anything in it other than propane or butane.

Rightguard etc. is cool for the "look what I can do with crap I had laying around" but beyond that, you should just avoid all the problems that the other stuff in the can causes.

If you don't have the ~$10 that a Benzomatic torch head + cylinder costs then
...
go down to the local bodega and get the cheapest butane lighter(s) they have. (Or, get the cheapest butane refill cartridge.) You know have a pure fuel in a convenient container with a valve that releases the fuel slowly enough that it'll take several seconds to get enough fuel in the chamber. This is good, the fueling will be much more consistent, therefore the gun will be more consistent.

If there is room in the chamber (i.e., no fan) you can pretty much stick your whole hand into the chamber with the lighter to fuel.

Or, add a piece of small diameter tubing (for example the insulation from some electrical wire) to the lighter so you can get the fuel well back into the chamber.


When you get a chance, pick up a 60cc syringe for $1 (available at most from supply stores). You know have a fuel meter as accurate as anything anyone else has. Total cost, $2~$3.
