I was just just thinking what should i do with my spare time, as i dont have the money to build my pneumatic launcher yet. So i was thinking about building a grenade launcher to launch smoke grenades.
I was wondering if the shot blast from a combustion gun would ignite the mix (kno3 sugar) the issue i see is the heat wouldent be on the smoke grenade long enough to light it? Any suggestions other then put a fuse in it, dump it down the barrel then fire?
smoke launcher
No, it wouldn't light it straight off.
The problem with the second option is that if you have a misfire, you have a melted cannon. You need a pneumatic, and something to protect the flame from the very high windspeeds which would put it out before you can fire it.
Try soaking a fuse in alcohol before firing would definately ignite, but probably go out.

what type of launcher r u planning on using or r u stickin with the combuster? i also need to know how u load it. i got too many ideas and need a more detailed idea of what ur tryin to do.
and r u gonna try anything else besides smoke grenades?

no i already have 3 different sized spud launchers. I am trying to come up with an effective smoke launcher which is used for smoke nades only. It will probly be muzzle loaded. At the moment combustion is easiest for me and isint going to cost me a cent, and its just a trial to see if i can get something to work well
i already thought about that problem with the fuse in the event of a missfire. thats why i was trying to come up with a different idea. Granted i could do it with a pneumatic to prevent the misfires but atm i only got gear to build combustions.
*EDIT-Well ive just thrown together a mini launcher to test ideas out. However i didnt realize how much noise they make Its almost on par with my full size launcher, its just more of a crack noise rather then a boom. Sadly after my test fire i dont think i can trial it tonight without some unwanted attention. Heres what ive built to test
**EDIT again- i just had a thought.....in regards to the fuse idea. this only just occured to me, but if the combustion chamber was loaded up with spray, and i droped a LIT fuse down my barrel, wouldent that set of the gun? I make my own fuse's also, there just kno3 and sugar rolled in a tobacco paper. I cannont test this tonight because of the noise, but i will tomorrow

try this. it works with almost any type of controlled solid propellant. it's an electric igniter. mold the kno3/sugar around the shaft with the fuse against it. don't cover the pin. u can figure out where to tie the string. or hold it by hand. if u make a cartridge than tie it to that.
when u launch it the string will pull the pin and start the chain of events. the longer the fuse on the inside the longer the delay. i used an old laser pointer to make this. all u need is about 3 volts, small x-mas light bulbs, flash or gun powder, some fuse, and a way to hold it all together. if u insulate it well u can reuse it a lot of times before the batteries die.
i originally made it for a push-button design (press it then throw it). it was also designed to be reusable. depending how u build the switch it can be used for many types of controlled solid propellant.

From the Rules
Discussion of solid propellants, explosive devices or incendiary projectiles fired specifically from a spud cannon is prohibited, and may result in a permanent banning of your account. For the purpose of this forum, these definitions will be used:
Solid propellant: Any substance containing all the chemical elements required to enable sustained combustion without the presence of additional oxidizers. This includes but is not limited to gunpowder, thermite, and many commercial and/or homemade pyrotechnic compounds.
For this purpose, nitroglycerine, though liquid, would qualify.
For this purpose, ordinary flour, though solid, would not qualify.
Explosive device: Any device that has the capability to release large amounts of stored energy rapidly.
Discussion of fireworks as projectiles is prohibited.
Discussion of "soda bottle bombs" or any other similar devices that may cause shrapnel as a result of uncontrolled rupture is prohibited.
Incendiary projectile: Any projectile that is capable of producing flame.
Rocket propelled projectiles, pyrotechnic smoke bombs, or any other burning projectiles would qualify as an incendiary projectile.
