I must agree....NEVER use a touch hole. I also strongly recommend using a lighter as ignition, no matter what the case. (excluding lantern lighters (the flint type)

@big bore: using acetylene in a large scale gun can be VERY dangerous.i use it in a small carbide cannon i made from backyard ballistics book (see avatar) and it is louder than my combustion cannon 4x the size.

also does any one know where to get replacement flint for a lanturn sparker online i cant find it in my hardware or sports store.

I had a really ghetto launcher once and used matches as the ignition. It actually worked well. An no, the cheapest, and probably the best ignition is a flint, which are about $3.

big bore wrote:as i'm new to this forum this may be an old idea. i tripod mount my golf ball gun. i mount a torch lighter (squeeze type sparker) inside the chamber of my gun drilling a tiny hole for the pull wire. this allows me to stand to the side. i use acetylene gas for propellant! BIG BANG!
one end cap," screw type " rupture. i like to stand clear and not hand hold
I truly hope you are not using Acetylene. If you are I recommend you stop. It is a very dangerous gas to use.

Since I am not useing my grill right now, I took the electric sparker off of it and used it. And I shot my new combustion and HOLY CRAP it was loud. like someone shot off a a 10 gague shot gun!

But I think the cheapest thing is to drill a hole in the side of the chamber, a small ball valve, and then light 2-3 matches stick them in it, then open the valve and they will drop in. That might work.

500 matches = $2.50
flint sparker = $2.80
BBQ grill igniter = $11.39
Stun Gun = $21.00
Electronic Spark Box = $54.00
Heat Vision = ?

That is the an approx. (US) price comparison of igniters and in order of reliability/safety/price.

ok... to add to this discussion, I used this same method first mentioned on my first cannons. It sucked. I used hairspray as fuel and a bbq ignighter stuck through a hole. I did TRY to seal it in with liquid nail but the heat from succesive firings eventually melted the plastic tube which carries the butane in th elighter to the end and then melted through the plastic handle. It is not a matter of it shooting out that is worisome, nor the fact that you will get burned. The fact of the matter is that even if you do get it to work you will eventually destroy the verry mechanism and have to replace it.

get a lantern sparker and use that. THey are cheap and easy to install.

Lukemc try going to a local gas station or smoke outlet. Get some replacement zippo lighter flints, they are exactly the same size and work the same.

try to place your lantern lighter close to the back endcap for easy replacement of the flint as well, that way you will not have to take the whole thing appart.
