Not really a finished project, just a bit of testing fun. I took the blade from this project and combined it with a hybrid chamber and did some testing at 10x:

Very impressive but the short barrel makes it deafeningly loud, probably won't be firing it again.

That makes me so happy. How about shooting a grappling hook over a few buildings? cant picture that ending well but I love it

Yeah, that one actually looks a bit more intimidating, maybe even 'practical', assuming you could suppress the noise somehow.
I imagine a busy downtown street, and amidst the hustle and bustle there is a faint *thwmp*.
A man falls over dead, while a bystander in a heavy winter jacket appears to gain 30 pounds briefly and emits a faint puff of conspicuous cotton-scented smoke.

Dunno about the laws where you are, but in this neck of the woods possession of that little beauty is a felony. You might want to look into that and if it doesn't look good, take down the video...
(She is a beauty though!)

If you want something that fits on a utility belt but still has that sort of performance, hybrid is definitely the way to go

LOLOL!
Making it quiet would be relatively easy, by containing the gasses:
The blade is heavy and therefore not going very fast, so stopping the piston would not be too much of a chore.
As to it being "practical" though, probably not - if you're close enough to use this, you can probably use a normal knife more effectively.
I digress, this is not a prototype for the KGB
how far can it shoot ?
Miles!

Alas practically everything on my channel would fall foul of local laws, but I try to keep a low profile.

Modified the design slightly to use a pusher piston, now that the gases are contained it's much quieter so I did some testing at 10x. Punched a nice hole through 1/32" mild steel. Note the delay between the knife moving and the glow from the burning gasses filling the "barrel".

Nice, it's nice for sure. And surprisingly quiet. Cool stuff, what mix were you using?

Yup, even at 16x - no gas comes out, so its only impact noise.

I've tried it up to 16x but the shots in the video are all at 10x

so a fully self contained cartridge relying on this principle is a viable option, right ?
