would a spud gun powerd by a spring (like a real airsoft gun) be a real spud gun.

So how would you go about that?

Direct contact (like cheap airsoft guns) or have the spring powering a piston to compress air behind the projectile (better airsoft guns).

I dont see why not. For a second instance, if you go to "Walmart" and buy the $20 BB\Dart spring loaded pistol or you spend more money and upgrade to the Co2, there both still BB guns. I aggree with Hotwired, If it's poppin out taters, I say yes.

Who really gives a flying f*ck? The classification of you gun in no which way is going to effect its performance or anything of that nature.

Generally I believe that potato guns are a simple device in which create a pressure difference, also being implemented in simple means. Generally the propelling force is some means of a gaseous fuel. Be it a stored higher then atmospheric pressure gas, or a combustive gas when ignited providing pressure. The gaseous fuel is most likely what gives it the 'potato launcher' classification. Solid fuel launchers, homemade or not are usually not referred to as a 'potato launcher'. Also I've never heard of a spring gun being called a 'potato launcher'. Although that issue could very well be based out of there rareness. I think the classification has far moved from its original ammo being the 'potato' or 'spud'.

I agree with Hotwired, if your shooting potato's it's a spud gun.

Why use spring power? Just go pneumatic.

Pneumatic isnt exactly hard you know, I felt the same way when I first started out, its easier then it looks, Only problem is over here pipe is bloody expensive.

I'd go with pneumatic any day rather than trying to find a safe way of compressing and releasing a bloody great spring.

Hotwired, I’ve got a under-leaver (the kind of springer that’s the most dangerous) spring powered pellet gun, it’s a china-cheapo, bean shooting it for about a year had lots of stuff go wrong, but guess what, I still have all my fingers!!! You just have to be smarter than the China-gun!

Judgment-arms, that argument can be made for any other number of false statments.

For instance, I could argue that negligent discharges don't happen (because I havn't seen it happen)... but they obviously do.

Or that cars are perfectly safe, because I've never seen them maim someone...

Or that stairs are safe, because I've never fallen down a flight of them and broken my neck.

...not that I'm saying that the spring-guns are dangerous, because I honestly don't know; I was just pointing out the logical error.

The spring in some air rifles is powerful enough to give a serious injury if it messes up. Hence the reason why I'm doubtful about any compressed spring device powerful enough to launch a potato.

i don't plan on launching potatos. I'm going to shot airsoft bbs
