Great site and forum you guys have here, wish I had known about it sooner. I'm a novice on the subject, but I hope to learn more from everyone here. As a intro, here's pics of the first mini I built:


As you see, I'm a minimalist with my builds, I use whatever materials are lying around. I made this one late one night in my room, and finished it in about 3 hours. Not great (especially compare to the amazing builds I seen so far here), but it works. The barrel, if you can believe it, is made from rolled printer paper.
I made my first spud gun when I was 15, an ABS built with an 18 inch x 3 inch chamber. It blew up on me on the second day when I just so happen to spray in the ultra-optimal amount of Right Guard into the chamber. Fortunately, since it was made from ABS piping, it didn't shatter into flying shrapnel like as I heard PVC will do. Not so luckily, I was holding the gun, and I got burned by the hot gases leaking from the giant crack in the chamber. I stick to building minis now for that reason, much safer and cheaper, but still lots of fun
