Exactly - it's possible for as little as 5 or 6 ft-lbs (and perhaps even less) to be fatal if your luck is poor.MrCrowley wrote:Just to add to that, last week two NZ police officers were shot during a covert operation, one of the officers died. They were shot by a .22cal air rifle.

According to NATO you need at least 58 ft/lbs of impact energy to reliably inflict a fatal wound, however as you said it's a matter of luck. Through the eyes, a projectile can reach the brain without having to be moving fast enough to penetrate the skull, it doesn't take much force.Ragnarok wrote:Exactly - it's possible for as little as 5 or 6 ft-lbs (and perhaps even less) to be fatal if your luck is poor.

BTW, I believe the police officer was killed by a single shot to the upper chest, probably got through the rib cage and pierced his heart.jackssmirkingrevenge wrote:According to NATO you need at least 58 ft/lbs of impact energy to reliably inflict a fatal wound, however as you said it's a matter of luck. Well, obviously, the more energy, the less precise the shot placement is needed to be to be fatal.jackssmirkingrevenge wrote:According to NATO you need at least 58 ft/lbs of impact energy to reliably inflict a fatal wound, however as you said it's a matter of luck.
But as a general rule, if it can pierce the skin to any real degree, it's got the potential to be fatal.
