i dont worry about residue, because my spud cannon is metal,i just burn the residue off.i do like lynx though,it is very powerful and smells great, even when burnt
Currently I use propane from a torch
I started out with Aqua Net hairspray but it's probably the weakest fuel. It also leaves a sticky residue and smells bad when burned.
I've tried silicone spray or some other special type of lubercant my friend had once, can't remember the brand or any thing else on the can other than the warning (Extreamly flammable; vapors may cause flash fire). I used a lot and it created a huge yellow flame when shot (looks cool at night). It probably left a large ammount of soot though and it also smelled bad when burned.
A few of my friends have suggested carburator cleaner and engine starter. I haven't tried them but I heard they work good.
Right Guard deoderant in the brown can, I heard, is a very clean burning propellant
I've once tried using denatured alcohol (apply with a spray bottle) Try to avoid letting it puddle, the puddles tend to stay on fire instead of going out after the shot. I melted a combustion chamber because of that.

I work at the airport in my small town and on my free time, I will put AVGAS (100 Octane gasoline) into old spray bottles. If I can adjust the nozzle to spray a nice mist, it works perfectly. It leaves a small puddle, but by the time the combustion occurs it has all burned. No worries about menlting. The bad part is the price...$2.85/gal right now. But it lasts a long time. And I personally love the smell of the AVGAS after it has burned.

Ive tried starter fluid and found it fairly difficult to get the right mixture. I stuck with hairspray for a while but was sooo messy. left black sticky stuff after a while !!??
