I disagree.
+1 with Hotwired.

How would it not innovative if you made a mechanism that cut, loaded and sealed the disk extremely quickly..perhaps almost as quickly as you could re-cock a QDV?

I like the way you think. Burst disks on a roll, auto fed like a cap gun. I like it. :D

It had been suggested before by using something on a roll like old photo film. Probably a bit thin though. Though it's starting to turn out that the QDV can even improve performance over a burst disk if made well. The only way to really get the disk to be better would be to make it to ensure no turbulence causing edges are left behind..

I really think if you start putting restrictions on a contest people just won't bother, only 5 people entered a contest where the only restriction was 'innovation'. Imagine how many people you will get in a contest which requires a specific calibre and ammunition, maybe 1?
If we really need a contest why don't we just say build the most inspiring, badass, fun to use cannon and present it well with a really good damage vid. Anyone can enter and the voting public can make up there own mind as to how the well a contestant has performed with respect to there experience, facilities and resources.

The only two restrictions were deadline and money that kept me out of this one. Not enough of either to build with a serious attempt at winning.

Another method of contesting:
-People vote on the cannons (or other devices), this makes the innovative cannons have an advantage over the standard day-to-day cannons.
-Result is also important, so the measured velocity (or sheets penetrated) should also play a role.
-Multiply the number of votes for a cannon with the amount of velocity or sheets penetrated: this generates the score. The one with the highest score wins.

How's that? :)

Actually, there was another restriction: An entry fee.
