Thanks Jack. That coin is roughly 0.4mm thicker than the one I used, which probably made a noticeable difference (both are steel though). Roughly how much energy were those two airsoft rounds carrying?

I may try this again sometime, if I can get around to making more capillary tubes. There was a noticeable band on my coin where the center was beginning to separate. Perhaps tweaking for efficiency, using a denser round, and overcharging the cap slightly would push it over the edge...

Anyone with a hybrid care to try?

@SB15: I'll believe in your friend's airsoft cannon when I see it

An attempt with a near-molten coin would be highly entertaining, but for obvious reasons not deserving of the prize.

No idea with this particular launcher with airsoft BBs, I'll do some chrony testing over the weekend.

I could try to shoot a 5 euro cent with the hybrid. I have HGDT running now, and, If i use a little teflon to round an airsoft BB in the 8mm barrel, a 0.24 gram BB will go 720 m/s (77joules) at 8x...I'mm gonna try that :D

Interesting. I did not expect the coin to crack like that at all. However, there's a good chance that the penny you used was zinc, which makes comparison with my steel dime rather difficult. I do have some U.S. pennies laying around, maybe I'll try with one of those. Unfortunately, I don't have any heavier airsoft rounds than .12g.

Thanks CpTn_lAw. This shows that "normal" launchers can definitely have some effect.

I'm sorry i didn't have any .12g BB's, and I did anither test in the afternoon, this time non saboted out of the 30 cm long barrel at a 2 euro-cents, which is (a good) 30% thicker. The result is not the same, it bent instead of cracking, and the bend is lighter. The speed was according to HGDT in the region of 460 m/s.
Here is a freeze frame of a shot without a barrel, but with a 1/2" ==> 1/4" reducuer. (and finally the HGDT capture)

Ah, but it takes a special kind of annoying git to bother looking up how "print screen" is written in French

By the way:
Roughly how much energy were those two airsoft rounds carrying?

0.25 gram: 785 feet per second, 5.3 ft/lbs

0.12 gram: 918 feet per second, 3.5 ft/lbs

Doesn't compare to a hybrid but not bad for a mini pneumatic with a 7 inch barrel ;)

Edit: tried again with a (virtually worthless ) 1 rouble coin and a 0.25 gram, visible dimple this time, and while there was no penetration, the clear acrylic shattering behind the coin will attest to the energy transfer :D

Well, after being bogged down with school for the past few months, I finally got to try it again. Still a 0.12g 6mm BB and 1.22mm thick steel Canadian dime, but a little more kinetic energy this time than before.

LINKY

The challenge is still open. More shots at steel coins, and perhaps a glimpse of SB15's elusive airsoft cannon would be appreciated.

I'll make an airsoft barrel for the ETC when machining is finished. If around 5km/s and twice the energy of a .44 magnum doesn't do it, nothing will.

thats some impressive penetration, but was it the bb or the hot gasses that did the majority of the damage?
