Rifling small bore barrels
Posted: Fri Apr 14, 2006 11:00 pm
I have just rifled my 3/4" barrel on my pneumatic using a piece of dowel that was a good fit and having hammerd nails into it and gridning them back to just points that etched the bore of my barrel and i spun it as i was pulling it and it worked really well with a carrot slug it spirreld through the air nicely and didnt tumble until it reached the end of it flight parth.
Ill have pics soon in about and hour or so.
EDIT: i need somewhere to reduce the size of my photo's,any help would be great thanks.im not 2 good with computers...sorry
Ohhk and yes i did do it by hand and i live in australia, not missisipi(spelling:S).Well it is very consistent and i did it extremely slow as to get it perfect and also becuase it takes alot of strenght, its quite hard to pull through you know.I out my pipe in a vice with the bushing acting as a stopper so it wouldnt pull through and scrape my barrel,i thought it would of been really hard to do but surpirisingly it was easer then first throught.
Now with the dowel i used 4 nails they where 20mm small tacking nails.and i set them as to cross through the dowel on four different points as to make a + through the dowel and only have about 1-2mm of nailhead showing this is why you use a tight fitting dowel, and i off set each nail about 15mm from each other along the dowel length wize as not to crack the dowel and so the nails dont hit each other but trying to get the nails to go in straight, that was a fun i can tell you.then it was up to my trusty dremel grinder to grind back the protruding end of the nail(not the head). Now first thing to do is to test it on a small section of same size pipe as not to ruin your good barrel and test it,you may need to do some fine tuneing to the nails head with a dremmel to set the depth not to deep and also to make it easer to pull through
BUT WAIT!!!joel said it was impossible to rifle small barrels, otherwize he would have them for sale...well hehehe i made my own:P and it works,i will get some more pics of the proccess and post soon, but im school holidays so i might not post right away because i have alot of things to do(drink cola, watch tv,sleep etc etc)
