I figured this out after I took apart a cheap scope I had to try and straighten one of the cross hairs, I realized it was just thin copper wire.

This definitely is no where near as good as a real scope but its a pretty fun thing to have and could be made better than some iron sights.

I had one side of an old pair of binoculars, but I assume this process will work with any binoculars you can take apart.

not really sure why but my pictures came out in a strange order, but its pretty straight forward.

Now put everything back together, the binocular should now have dark, in focus cross hairs. (probably should have wrapped it a little tighter to get straighter lines)

The plastic piece holding my lens already had 4 grooves in it, I just crossed the wire and wrapped it around the outside to hold it in place, glue might be necessary to secure the wire.

Cool, I have an old pair of kiddie binoculars I could do this with. I thought of adding crosshairs, but not copper wires..

Though if I do this I'll find a nice looking case for it so it doesn't look too newbish..

I did this with fisher price binos in my balloon-at-the-end-of-a-pipe launcher days :) it sort-of works but with ridiculously cheap 4x20 scopes available almost anywhere it hardly seems worth the effort.

I bought mine for 16PLN (that's about 6.4 AUD)

who said that a scope has to be expensive...? sure it's not ideal but there is no point in putting a better one on a spudgun

Scopes can be bought even cheaper:

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.6280
(price 6,77usd incl. shipping)

(also check the scope mounts and other stuff in the "Flashlight, Guns&Lasers" section)

There is indeed no sense of putting a high quality scope on a spudgun. (the tuning of a spudgun+scope is quite hard, even if you got "consistent" ammo)

This one is $10 aud minus shipping, you'll find that US $6.70 and AUD $10 would be about the same.

Plus, the one I linked to is closer so shipping would be much nicer.

Firstly, a warning. Make sure you've got a way of mounting any scope you buy. Hose clipping it to the launcher will likely shift and make a mockery of the concept of any consistent point of aim.

Questionable. At the very least, I'd make sure that the scope in question is capable of taking recoil, which essentially means you shouldn't buy an airgun one that's not spring gun rated (often marked as shockproof or recoilproof.).
It's hard to find things that aren't these days, but if you're already looking at super cheap stuff, it's more likely you'll run across them.

It also depends on your exact definition of spudgun. There's a snowball's chance in hell that I'd get away with a $10 scope on my sub-MOA launcher project.

@rag
scopes for spring air guns are different because they have to handle shock caused by the piston colliding with the rest of the gun...
I've seen scope mounts that cut groves in the rails because of the recoil

it doesn't mean that the scopes are better
it means that spring air guns are worse

lol yes it does.. but for 99.9% guns on this site you don't need anything better... anyway by definition a spudgun is a launcher firing potatoes :)

besides, who said that you have to use a scope ?? with your supernatural skilzzz you might as well achieve sub MOA accuracy with iron sights :)

lol do it in a simo hayha way

Mounting is a problem I could run into with mine. I might end up just milling a block of aluminum to whatever I need, but hopefully I can find rings that will basically fit my barrel (-19mm)

@POLAND_SPUD: I'm quite aware of what spring gun rated means - it means the scopes are tougher and able to deal with harsher recoil, which quite a few spudguns have.

I know my cannons have tried to dislocate my shoulder more than once.

If you fancy trying to shoot MOA at a quarter mile with ironsights, then be my guest.

Rag- will H.E.A.L. 2 be rifled? You notice very substantial accuracy improvements, even over shorter ranges.

That's an unknown right now.
I've been developing methods of producing effective rifling, so it could have rifling on one (or more) of the interchangeable barrels.
In other words, I can do it - whether I'm actually going to is another matter. There's no immediate demand for it, really.

Either way, the long range accuracy attempts will be done in a smoothbore barrel. The darts aren't designed to work with rifling.
It'd be a waste to design a projectile capable of the accuracy and penetration I'm looking for, then screw it up by firing it from a barrel it was never supposed to work with.

Well it'd be obvious you would be using a stable ammo for the long range shots in a smoothbore- no way in hell you'd get get close otherwise.

Assuming it's just a standard dart (non-discarding) what is the sabot made from? I'm looking for something with moar beef for this stainless steel spike I have..
