Hi
Here is the easiest way to get it started
You should use transistor with radiator, at least 400V 10 Amps.

You can also use the circuit
McCoytheLesser posted in another thread:
If you have some RC batteries you might be able to try to make a
555 ignition circuit. I've built this exact circuit with great results and all the components are available at Radioshack, BUT it will drain small current sources in a heartbeat. Personally, for a spud gun, I'd just stick to the electric BBQ lighter or a stungun.
The 555 is the "wave generator" in
Zywiec's post.

I never thought about discharging a flash capacitor into a coil. If you put another flash capacitor in parallel with the first one, there should be a larger spark from the ignition coil. As for the "12 or 10 gauge" wire to the spark strip, I've used a little as 16 gauge with a taser and still don't have corona loss(corona is tiny sparks, to those who don't know). Also a spark plug wire isn't a good choice because the core of the wire is also a resistor which will diminish your spark. Find an old T.V. and get the H.V. wire out of it. If that isn't obtainable you can stick to copper wire but BE CAREFUL with it. A shock from an ignition coil doesn't feel too good
