Should/Can we install a ratings based listing in showcase?

In the showcase area I would like to see all forums listed by votes on a ranking system than the currently recency of last post listing.
ie 5. high pressure, efficient, new design technology
4. Too good to be 3 or almost 5 just needed forum discussion inputs
3. nothing new but nicely done
2. needs tidying up
1. back to the drawing board
Would make it easier to find the more worthy information quicker, does anyone else agree or am I alone?
At the moment the current ordering doesn't really achieve anything other than listing based on date of thread and how recently it was posted in, of no great practical use in my mind
LATE EDIT repeated in my next post :Basically so if I am researching the next evolution in Cannon design rather than have to search through a whole lot of average or unworkable designs, with a points based listing order I would hope to find what I needed quicker, while some threads of bad ideas and dumb questions have great answers from the forum, this information will always eventually show up in a higher ranked thread.
As for self esteem boosts and encouragement, no person quits doing something they enjoy and benefit from because their initial score was low.
While some e hate is present I don't think many people post in such a manner as to crush a newbs interest.
And also for ego, who isn't motivated by that? who wouldn't want to earn top cannon/design/how to
Plus, it wouldn't be fair to all the old cannons on the forum which would require a bunch of people to go through and vote for them.
I agree I was thinking someone might go through and allocate them an intial allocation of numbers based on views multiplied by what they thought 1-5

Yea that would be neat but too much of a hastle.
Who is to say how well a cannon is built. Every cannon whether it be simple or complex has its own creative element within it. Giving somebody a 1 would just put a builder down when they have spent time and money creating it. I think comment boxes are a great way to give advice and compliment on certain aspects of it. I rather look and read what people have to say than look and see somebody gave me a 1 or a 5. That's just my take on the idea.
Cheers!

I agree with the above. Giving a cannon 1* because it's ghetto as hell isn't very fair. Spudfiles isn't about ranking cannons best to worse, it's about sharing our cannons with each other to create a huge database of information second to none.
Plus, it wouldn't be fair to all the old cannons on the forum which would require a bunch of people to go through and vote for them.
Nice idea though.

Not to mention that all the old cannons would lose out on the "new design technology" bonus. The tech might have been new then, but it will have been copied since. Anyone who went back would have to know their spudding timeline better than I do.
I think you'd see "Inflation" because of that. A couple of years ago, 10x hybrids were VERY scarce, and big news . Today, 10x is nice, but we all know about a certain hybrid.
Yes, spudguns are improving, but that doesn't make the old ones any worse or less impressive/important.

I think you hit the nail on the head Rag when you said important. Even the tiny little q-tip shooters have there place here and are important. If not to you or me then to a young first time spudder that is learning the "trade".
You can't expect everyone to start as big as Larda

You make a good point. If my early cannons (although I wasn't on any forums at that time) had been written off as "rubbish", I probably wouldn't be here today.
So although my early cannons might have been pretty poor by any real standards, they were important to my being here.
And although my being here might not have affected spudding by any noticeable amount, it would have changed my life quite a bit.

I think the point has been missed! But who is to judge what is the next evolution in cannon design and what's not? That's a rhetorical question by the way, I know that 'we' are supposed to judge, but I still think it's a no-where idea currently.
Different people see different things in everything. If you want something revolutionary.
who wouldn't want to earn top cannon/design/how to
As long as i'm helping at least one person in a hundred, I couldn't care if it was the next viral on the internet or not.
And there's still the problem of old threads and 'inflation' as Rag put it.

The "engineering landmark" idea is fine. The problem is, people will see it as a "How good is this cannon" system.
Perhaps this idea can be processed into something for the Spudwiki, a page of cannons that are good technical example of various traits, and articles that are worth the read.
You know, the ones the older members among us would reference if we were advising a newbie, and the ones we'd say "How have you not heard of X yet!?!?"
In fact, I've just spent a long time starting just that:
http://www.spudfiles.com/spud_wiki/inde ... 6_articles
It's far from complete and missing loads - there are definitely other cannons that deserve a space in there (more combustions would be nice), but those are just the ones that sprung to mind.
Jump in and add more. We'll be able to point newbies at it in future and save ourselves some time.

urbanfarm if you spend here enough time you'll know which gun is good and what makes a powerful gun
instead of ranking system there should be more info in wiki so that new members can find one place explaining basic questions (but something tells me it won't stop them from starting new threads to ask for something already explained there)

i think a rating system doesn't suit spudfiles.
however, we could include a 'badge' system that identifies a cannon to have power, ergonomics, accuracy or whatever, would make looking for ideas a lot easier. (although this could also turn into a 'how good is this' system)

Ragnarok, thats a great idea. Keep adding on to that Wiki. I hypothesize it will be a valuable asset in the near future. 8)

Which is what I was trying to circumvent with the Spudwiki page.
Specifically pulling out certain cannons as "good examples" avoids cannons being rated as 5 star left right and centre, and also prevents anybody being disappointed by getting a rating of only one or two stars.
No poor results, just a list of cannons that are worth knowing about. I wouldn't rank everything I've listed as 5 star (but they're certainly not at the bottom end of the scale), but they're sort of the "celebrity" of cannons, in some way a bit more memorable.
Like I said, it's an incomplete list. Get busy, but don't just add things at random. (Note: I've just added Revolver X, and some of Sgort's work to the depressingly small combustion list)
