What not to do!
Even just a clean blast of compressed air can totally bugger up your eyes, let alone the totally unclean and unfiltered stuff generally stuffed down cannons with particles and dust.
Combustions have the extra bonus of the gas being very hot.
Daft bugger got lucky he didn't take that in the face, can't tell if there was anything in there but tissue paper but the blast went right past his forehead.

Some people are just stupid.
I think he was shooting water but I cant tell for sure.
if there was a spud in there he would have died.

I doubt it. Many spray n' pray combustions are pretty wimpy, enough that youtube is shot-blasted with videos of twats firing them at each other without any death or even many injuries beyond a large bruise.bigbob12345 wrote:if there was a spud in there he would have died.
Also, Daniel Berry (Frogboy) didn't die, and although we have to assume his mix was off, his projectile wasn't sitting at the top of the barrel (listen at the start people!).
Getting hit by a high power pneumatic or an advanced combustion might be fatal, but we have to hope that anyone who has shown the smarts to build one of those types of cannons has the smarts not to look down the barrel.
Does that thing kinda look like a big cat to you?
Best safety system you can put in, with minimal thought, is barrel length.
The less capable you are of having your head over the muzzle with the trigger system still in contact with your hand, the better. Still, I have a suspicion darwin boys cannon was some kind of tinpot muzzle loading and igniting thing.
I've never looked down the barrel of my cannon ever, even when I'm certain it's unloaded and unpressurised. My imagination works overtime and is probably the best bit of PPE I have.

It depends on a lot of things whether he would have died or not like mix, c:b ratio, pneumatic or combustion, and size of projectile just to name a few. But I would say that getting hit in the face at point blank with an average spudgun would most likley be fatal. Of course that is debatable but thats my opinion.Ragnarok wrote:I doubt it. Why should being hit in the face be more fatal than taking a hit to the forehead?bigbob12345 wrote:It depends on a lot of things whether he would have died or not like mix, c:b ratio, pneumatic or combustion, and size of projectile just to name a few. The average spudgun on this forum probably would be fatal in those circumstances. The average spudgun that people look down the barrel on, unlikely, given we hear few reports of spudgun fatalities (true spudguns, I'm not talking about Ryan Meerdink's pipe bomb), and I'm sure we would if there were one.

Humans can be extremely resilient, but extremely fragile at the same time. It just takes something hitting at just the wrong place. There has been one death that I can think of from a standard combustion, but it was the end cap and not the projectile that caused it. I'm sure a little combustion like that could kill if it hit right, but for the most part it is not likely to kill with a soft projectile.Ragnarok wrote: The average spudgun on this forum probably would be fatal in those circumstances. I never heard about that, but I assume it hit him in the chest and stopped his heart?clide wrote:Humans can be extremely resilient, but extremely fragile at the same time. It's rare to happen, but for a very short period in the cycle of the heart, a hard enough blow can completely disrupt the cycle. A wildly swung punch that connected the chest has left a few people facing manslaughter charges because of such misfortune.

Yep, that is pretty much what happened based on what we could gather.Ragnarok wrote:I never heard about that, but I assume it hit him in the chest and stopped his heart?

I wish I would have copied the article to the thread because it doesn't seem to be cached anywhere.

It's always sad to hear such a thing, even if you are two years too late. Well, here's hoping we don't hear about any more spudding deaths (at least for a very long time) - especially anyone from the forum.

A hit to the nose at that angle could easily send bone fragments into the brain, it could very easily have been lethal with a substantial projectile.
The moral here is, very little knowledge can be gained from looking down a barrel, even if it seems to be an intuitive action to take. One of the basic rules is Never, EVER point an barrelled device at anything you value, presumably that would include one's face. If you must look down the barrel, use a mirror or remove the barrel.

anyone has ever tried shooting himslef in stomach with air at 350 psi.?
I did that and it was as if I was punched very hard
ok it was stupid but I did that intentionaly and I've checked twice that there is no ammo loaded... but I have to agree that loaking down the barrel of a gun is possibly the worst thing one can do...

I've heard stories of people who have lost fingers to a stream of high pressure air, considering that you can cut steel with water if you push it hard enough then it sounds fairly plausible. Even a tiny piece of debris in the barrel hitting your eye could be enough to blind you.
