Ebay store: 10 1/2" 440c SS bearings- $8.00
Yeah, but you'd have to be a total eejit to buy stainless steel ball bearings to fire from a cannon... get a cheaper variant of steel.

You'll lose some, dent others so they can't be reused, etc... No sense in wasting a load more money for balls that won't do any job better than chrome steel balls.
Does that thing kinda look like a big cat to you?

Probably not really any cheaper, lead is pretty expensive and lead shot will only go up to what ~1/4"? Besides, lead is not very environmentally friendly.
you can buy almost any size you want to if you spend time looking for them... lead isn't enviromentally friendly.... it just happends that it's being used to make firearm bullets
Yes. But lead is being phased out for shotgun shells, particular for the shooting of water fowl.

Old shooting ranges have to be remediated (the lead is collected since it poisons the soil and ground water) when they are taken out of service. Why use a toxin when steel is cheaper? If your barrel can handle a steel round then steel is prefered to lead.
