casting custom slugs

i was just pondering.
you know how tin solder is really soft and has a low melting point, perhaps you caould form some kind of mold, be it some barrel pipe cut off or clay or wood, then with a soldering iron continuouslly melt the solder until it fills the mold, let the solder cool, sparate the mold, then you have a slug.

since the slug is soft, it'll deform/expand on impact


think it could work? any ideas?

it could work, but i dont know about in pvc, i'd try it in copper though, people have melted lead for molds for their copper cannons, and spudinator uses 2" lead casts in his hybrid (broke the sound barrier with one)

Lead melts at about 600 degrees centigrade, so you can melt it fine in a stainless steel saucepan. DO NOT use an aluminium pan, as this has a similar melting point to that of lead, so the pan will melt.

You'll also need a high melting point grease to stop the lead from sticking to the mold. There is a copper based spray on greases that is resistant to 1100 degrees centigrade, and works well.

what is this copper grease called? how much? where can i get it from?



would i need grease etc if i were to use solder?
what could i use for a mold?how can i make a mold? any ideas?

i'd use some of your barrel stock for a mold, though that may only work with copper, brass or steel, i've accidentally gotten some solder flecks on my pvc cannon while i was attatching wires, and it left a brown mark on there, so i dont think PVC will work good

casting slugs can be a waste of time because you get about 1 shot from every slug but candle wax works well with lead pellets in it so you can choose how much it weighs with out changing the size

Aluminum melts at around 1200 degrees, and lead at 600 (F) so you probably won't melt through, but its still not a good idea. Melting something like zinc would probably be cheaper than solder. I've done it - just get a bunch of pennies from after 1982 (might be 1981), and they melt very easily, and the thin copper coating floats toi the top of the mixture. Filling empty 12 gram CO2 cartridges is impressive

has anyone ever tryed melting down crayons for slugs? ik they would explode on impact but they are cheap and have a very low melting point and u can but them in the hundreds i bet.

yeah, i've melted crayons on a hot day in the sun, it'd be easy enough, just use a pair of plyers and a propane torch, you can buy them really cheap, or at the end of the year the elementary schools might throw them out because the little kids break them and stuff.

Ive used crayons for slugs and they would never stick together (just flake they wont stick to another). I thought of the same thing i have billions of crayons at my house and i dont use them. So if your succesful at it tell me what you did so i can try it out your way. Walrus your a good gambler.

i did fine a way that kind of works. u just put like 10 crayons on some foil and heat it up till they liquify then just pour it down a spare pipe that was an unglued end cap on it, just fill the pipe and wait for it to harden then remove the endcap and push the crayon out then cut it into slugs.

the down side to crayons is that they leave colored skid marks down the inside of the barrell lol

lol, umm well lets be honest, how often do u look inside ur barrel? as far as im concerened ur either stuff in the ammo or shooting it out, lol, but i guess u could just wrap it in a thin layer of way paper to prevent that, but back to the originaly topic, solder would be way to expensive, but i guess fun, hmm how about chocolate? but bitter sweet chocolate otherwise it would be a waste lol
