Ball Valve Idea

Seriously mate, Just keep it to a simple ball vavle by itself or think about using something else. Which leads me to ask(this is for any aussie spudders, cos i live in aus) where have u found sprinkler valves, and what brand is the best to use

The butterfly valve wouldnt be able to open when the ball valve is partially open because the casing is going to hold it shut, when the ball is turned all the way the piece of the plastic flap is going to be in the open and fly open. I hope this makes sense.

What I said was that to get the same performance from a ball valve as you would from a piston valve, it would take you dramatically more time and money.
Does that thing kinda look like a big cat to you?

I said FOR THE SAME PERFORMANCE.
You will NOT get the SAME level of performance from a ball valve based design as from a piston valve for the same resources. You will get LESS performance.
To get the SAME performance, you will need to spend more resources than you would on the piston valve. A ball valve may cost less, but it will also have LESS performance.
Clear yet? Stop asking me what part costs more, because I didn't say your valve would cost more. You're not going to get the same performance - ergo, the statement does not apply.
If you were driving to get the same performance, you would have to spend much more - this is where the statement applies.

Anyway, I'm doubtful that your design will even work. I believe the can will crush within the valve the moment you try and use it for the first time - probably wrecking the valve in the process. That doesn't even mention the fact the "shuttle" (which I'm using to avoid calling it a piston, which confuses matters) will almost certainly break its tether every single time.
Even if your valve doesn't fail in these ways, a piston valve doesn't need to be reset every time by shoving parts back into it.

If he cant read that and finally understand to just give up on the "shuttle" idea then there is something wrong. And you are completly right about having to reload the "shuttle" everytime you want fire it just pointless time wasted to reload it.

Just finished it, yesterday. Shot it today (100psi) with a potato in the valve and there was no mush! I even tried it again but turned the valve really slowly, and still, a perfect shot! No extra parts, no extra costs.

Not the butterfly or shuttle, like i said in my last post, the potato was just in the valve. Nothing else.

yes until i see video proof i'm sticking with ragnarok because i don't think the design actually worked i think your just saying it did to try and disprove ragnarok. and if it did work i can guarantee you it wasn't as good as a piston valve, and don't just show us a vid of you opening the ball valve and firing the potato show actual proof of concept. and another thing if it did work how do you know it perform better than just the ball valve alone
I'm sorry, but I'm not going to believe this.
If you're seriously trying to tell me that a potato isn't going to extrude itself through the half opened valve with those pressures behind it, I refer you to this method of cooking them known as mashed potatoes - which oddly enough is prepared by forcing potatoes through narrow gaps.

we should break out the measuring thingys (sorry but the name is totally slipping my mind right now... those things that measure the velocity of the projectile?) and then we will see if its anymore efficient

ok im going to go right now and try this myself.
edit: ok well, to make it work i removed my barrel so it was just down to the ball valve, and i got a potato slug nice and tight inside the ball valve fired it at about 95 psi. and i think it may have worked, the peice of potato was still reasonbly whole, except for sum injuries sustained when it hit the ground.
but i would not use my results to comfirm what theepicmool has acheived i merely done it myself because i was bored and wanted something to do, also it was only at 95psi so mabe there wasnt enough pressure to act on the potato.
but theepicmool, it would be good to see some proof, btw dont anyone bother askin me for any proof, like i said i only tried it cos i was bored.

Did you release the ball valve slowly? Thats how I confirmed that mine worked.
