i think golfballs would prove extremely effective, you could penetrate their boat hull, sinking them. doesn't get much more effective then drowning them.

ironically if nations were deploying Q-ships we wouldn't know because it woud be a secret

however the frequency of actual attacks may not be high enough yet, cause if none of the Q-ships get attacked then it will just be a waste of money

On the other hand, announcing the use of Q-ships while not deploying any of them may reduce the amount attacks. Scare them away by bluffing.

Make up a few reports of imaginary pirate ships that have been sunk by the Q-ships and publish an article about the success of the new Q-ships. Every pirate that can read a newspaper will think again before planning an attack.

the size and compressed air-making ablilty of these ships has been mentioned a few times. just out of curiousity, what would the feasibility of hooking up a qev/pop off semi/auto gun with a 2" piston valve and a GB barrell? does that system work at larger sizes assuming the air supply is ample? if that would work, what kind of compressor would be needed to run it?

Has anyone brought Larda into this? I'd like to see a pirates reaction when a golfball flew out of his cannon at them.

Certainly feasible given the sort of supply available on board a ship. I'm sure that a medium sized shop compressor would be sufficient to run such a cannon, provided rate of fire was kept relatively low.

It would be a hassle to reload but really with that sort of power, you only need one shot :D

After just reading the response in D_hall's (http://www.spudfiles.com/forums/viewtop ... 999#275999) pet peeves topic with the Mythbusters firing a chain out of a cannon, I would have to say that THAT would be your most devastating ammo.

Hah, yeah but you would need a hell of a cannon to penetrate the hull of a ship like that. At high velocity wouldn't the golfball pretty much disintegrate on contact with such a dense target (i.e. the ship's hull). Or would it actually make it through the hull at a supersonic speed? Anyone know? I guess there's only one way to find out for sure..... :P   :P

Ever heard of Chain Shot?
They looked a bit like a pair of nunchucks and were fired out of a cannon. They would wrap around the enemy ship's mast and cut it in half.

Methinks I see a new projectile for the ME-105H.

A single AC-130U gunship orbiting the pirate base would be even more effective ;)

but that is assuming you kill 11 of the pirates first :tongue3:
