I just wanted to say, best of luck to anyone in there. I hope no members are hurt. I know jagerbond is in Hawaii so i'm hoping there aren't any big tsunamis around where any members live.

For those of you who haven't heard the word...
There was an earthquake off the shore of chile in the Santiago area. About 350km out. Magnitude of 8.8. There have been 33 after shocks so far. The biggest measured 6.9. There are people in hawaii, Asia and other surrounding countries and islands preparing for tsunamis. It happened around 3:30 local time. Some was felt in buenos aries, argentina almost 1000 miles away.

So best of luck to anyone affected. I hope no members are hurt.
Jagerbond is the only member I know of that might be affected.
Please mention others.
Life's too short to mark off the items on your wish list...

I hate these stupid "tsunami" warnings, I agree that they should warn everyone (especially boaties) but the media always makes it a far bigger deal than it really is. I live about 250m from the beach, the "tsunami" was supposed to "strike" about an hour ago, nothing noticable has really happened.
Which side of the island do you live on?

And, you mean that you hate how the media treats the warnings and not the warnings themselves?

BTW, nobody has a clue how to accurately predict the magnitude of a tsunami. By the time the mathematical models have enough data for a descent prediction it is too late to do anything with the information. Hence the "chicken little" type warnings.

At least with a tsunami there is a significant threat. Around here we get "chicken little" everytime it looks like it's going to snow (which is a couple times a month in the winter).

I live in Auckland, which is an isthmus, so technically it is situated on both the Pacific and Tasman, but i'm on the Pacific side myself.

I was reading over an article about the scientists who have to gauge these tsunami's and at one point they were thinking of not even bothering making an East Coast wide alert. Like I said, I agree that the warnings should be widely broadcasted and reasonable safety measures taken in to account, even if they seem drastic, but the media takes the story and runs with it like we're expecting to be the new Atlantis.

It's kind of embarrassing at times, last time we had a tsunami alert was for an earthquake in Samoa I believe, and the story was even published in German newspapers even though most beaches here witnessed almost nothing, perhaps a 40cm swell was visible at a few locations.
