My guess is that because the breech split, all the pressure was lost, and therefore the projectile failed to penetrate the milk jug.
You should make a breech out of cast epoxy.

Aussies all they way!! I'm working on my own air rifle now, hopefully get it up to say 300psi and perhaps a 6mm barrel would be handy, if I can get my hands on come copper pellets...anyway mate good luck with your creation, it's holidays for me now so I can get a lot done on this!
Edit: Heading down to Bunnings, do you think they have 20mm threaded piping? I'm guessing thats the way to build my chamber. I'm using MRR's base for a piston valve, sill don't understand these things yet, maybe when I test it with my chamber on I'll work it out. Wish me luck guys.

hey great gun,
sorry but this question is a bit off topic but,
i have built a pvc coaxial with a 40mm chamber and cylinder(where piston slides up and down) with a 20mm barrel. My first piston was made of cast hot glue with a 6mm rubber sealing face. my second piston was mae of a 25mm coupling with rubber sealing face bolted on to it. My problem is that the piston seals the barrel, the gun pressurizes but when i try to shoot all the air just escapes out of my blowgun pilot and the piton doesn't even move. Why is this?

how tight is you piston? did you put a equalization port if so try block it up.
if the piston is air tight and you know it make a tiny hole the size of a needle to let air in the chamber
you can also use a bigger pilot valve if it works you need a tighter piston
and try to make piston as light as you can
