Going for velocity records means large and loud launchers, which is not ideal for my situation. I'd love to give an airsoft BB ago, sadly the barrel is 5.5mm so they don't fit

Have another couple of shots at 14x:

you could cut a couple bbs down to size (if you have the patience) or you could cast some epoxy projectiles

I was thinking of a bit of foil hammered into a section of barrel to form a lightweight aluminium slug...

As soon as I find a similar male threaded fitting, 'cause this one came out of my scrap box.

What's the OD of your barrel? Perhaps you can sleeve a 6mm barrel over it.
Just have 2" or so of small diameter barrel that you can slide the 6mm barrel over.
Then you have a 4" piece of 6mm pipe to connect the smaller barrel again.

It's easier to find a male threaded fitting and slip on a whole new barrel, I'll see if I can find something similar at work because it looks like an ATEX fitting so the original one probably came from work originally anyway

I'm pleased to announce that a matching male fitting has been located, and a 6mm barrel over twice as long as the current one has been fitted and is currently curing.

If I got almost 1,000 fps with a 1 gram projectile in a much shorter barrel, then I expect 0.12-0.25g BBs in this one should be well over the speed of sound :D watch this space.

don't forget that a larger cal. and longer barrel can act as a suppressor

... though the expected sonic crack will most likely cancel out this beneficial effect
