For me, at least, the only way another hobby could compete, would be if I were "building my own".
I agree, when i buy/make something, i always want to change it, take it apart and other things like that. Infact, today, i might make a small wood turning lathe with an old CD motor, like this:

CD motor?
I could only guess you meant DC motor? Or are you talking the motor out of a cd player or something?

Despite me being nearly 30 years old, I got a couple of video games (COD Black Ops + Fable III), a Lego set, a Nerf gun, a toy car, and NO clothes (I did get a new watch, but that probably doesn't count).

Yeah, a brushless CD-rom motor out of an old hard-drive.

A CD motor is not strong enough. You will want more torque. The one in the Youtube video used a hand vac motor which is considerably larger and stronger than a CD drive motor or hard drive motor.

And the sewing machine motor can be sped up and slowed down.
A complete sewing machine also makes an excellent basis for a benchtop scroll saw. I made one, once, that used common coping saw blades.
If you can't fix it, you don't own it.

That is not actually a wood lathe. It turns small pieces of foam. I talked to the guy on instructables awhile ago when I was messing around with foam lathes.

I can't believe the ashes... We started so well, with Siddle getting 6 wickets and a hat-trick on the first test... We then proceeded to bat reasonably well the next innings...then got completely curbstomped for the rest of the series
