Wow, I remember both of those sizes. The PDP11 got a 5 meg hard drive. It was a single platter removable cartridge. 14 inch disk I think. Nomenclature was RK05 by Digital.velocity3x wrote:In the mid 80's, I bought a new Seagate 277R hard drive for almost $700.00. It had a 65mb capacity. I thought........how could I ever need more storage than that?boyntonstu wrote:Later on, I remember the first hard disk - 5 Megabytes!
The Segate was not an MFM drive so it needed to use a RLL controller to get the full capacity. If run on an MFM controller, the size was 1/3rd smaller. Somewhere in my archive (junk heap) I may still have one of those 5.25 inch drives kicking about.
My most expensive drive is a CDC (Control Data Corporation) 40 Meg drive. It was Novel Netware certified, so it sold for $2400 US.
Here is a video of the boot sequence with the 5 meg drive.

Good memory, Tech. I though I had some serious computing power......65mb and Dos 3.3.Technician1002 wrote:The Segate was not an MFM drive so it needed to use a RLL controller to get the full capacity. If run on an MFM controller, the size was 1/3rd smaller.
I remember the C64, it was the first computer I ever used. I've still got it too, only game I had that was worth playing was "Wizard of Wor" if my memory doesn't fail me.
Somewhat more recently, I remember when I thought I'd won the lottery, a 6.2GB HDD, 64MB Nvidia video card and a TV capture card. All for about $5.
Now I don't use any computer unless it has at least 2 cores, preferably 4.

Goodness, this discussion has gone down the route of "Are You Being Shagged".
Fortunately I'm in the situation that if one becomes a "metrosexual", one doesn't survive. The country isn't very forgiving when it comes to "pussification". I refuse to listen to country "music" though, I get ostracized for that.
And yes, I do like pussies too.
Dogs have masters, pussies have slaves.
Enough innuendo now.
