If a percussion trigger is used to initiate a smoke charge, the percussion weight could be as simple as a brass tube on the bolt. When launched the tube would be all the way at the tail. It would remain there on launch. On impact it slamming forward could initiate a percussion fuse and start the smoke. No special sabot would be needed.
Home made chemestry or a couple bags of firworks smoke bombs could be cut open to make your smoke charge. A couple of friends from good spotting locations (behind trees) could then triangulate on the landing zone and narrow the search.

Damn you, lathe owners!
Careful.I'm thinking I might take my chances and fire at this. It's about 3500m away (if shot from the beach/cliffs), the firing zone is close to my house (2min walk) and the island receives a large amount of visitors at one time of the day yet practically zero at another time of the day.
If I included an email address or phone number waterproofed inside the projectile, there is the slim possibility either a tourist or a DOC (Department Of Conservation) worker would find it and hopefully report it. I could make the note and email address sound official so they are more likely to report it. I wouldn't be worried about someone reporting it to the police though.
I would.
I still think a two part projectile designed to separate on impact with some kind of easy to find audio/visual device on the tail is the best idea.
MrC, if you shoot this and never find it I think the forum will hate you for a long time

D_Hall's idea of glow in the dark dye has given me new hope for a beach <s>assault</s> test, at least until one of you cronies destroys that idea too
Yeah now that I think about it, I don't want to go to jail for criminally negligent homicideCareful.

I think a smoke composition inside the projectile will make it more traceable than you think.
A very simple k3wl smoke bomb will do the job.

that would be a pretty good solution.. But I think behind the dark background a white smoke mixture would be more visible.

Why dont you use this type of mixture it is very good and can last for a while but depends how much you use:
Edit: And its very visable

Or you could use a fuse to set the ignition of a smoke mixture to the desired time. One thing to be concerned with though, is the little thrust produced by such mixture. Not really relevant for smoke bombs on the ground, but highly enough to destabilize your projectile while in flight.
You should do a little maths to determine a high-probability landing zone. and mark it on a map.
A few spotters with binoculars will help locating the projectile in flight, or on the ground.
I think the smoke detecting method is the most convenient for that challenge!
I also think Tech's idea of a primer hit on impact is very good, and should give convincing results.
And LeMaudit, wow man! awesome machining !!

I don't think pyrotechnic means of detection should be discussed here, it's a very short step from igniting a projectile filled with smoke composition to "magic powder" and that's not the sort of information that should be linked to spudfiles.
The idea of glow-in-the-dark paintis quite appealing, for starters you could paint the whole projectile and then have it distribute paint on impact.
You could also have it shedglow-in-the-dark BBs on hitting the ground (which could be held in a hollow tail section). Another option could be releasing highly reflective surfaces that would shimmer in bright sunlight and catch the eye, such as strips of tinfoil - though these would be prone to dispersal by wind. Hence, omg! disco ball beads

I will not... and as it is a finder-keeper, that's some incentive for you to spend some time to retrieve it, and keep it as an used paperweight...and if I don't, only LeMaudit will
And it's a Mark I remember... meaning there's some plan for Mark II I'll be damned if you don't see more shiny stuff on SpudFiles during the year
The way this one is build doesn't help for putting things inside. it's only planned for a bit of magic powder, that's all. I suggest not to go into more complicated stuff or attaching things to it like leds, it will be better to plan something maybe a little bigger and a little more appropriate to a different solution later. This Mark I is just a shoot and pray solution
One thing someone could try is too shoot a simple piezo in a container and see if it is still working. The ones I found were loud enough to help for a retrieval I think, but needed a slightly bigger ammo. Around 25mm instead of 19. I think this could be a very simple way for a Mark II
And I ask it again, if someone want to join the fun and help making some electronic retrieval gizmo, I can make an appropriate shiny container for it 8)
Or, we can work on a design for a retrieval tool, like this contraption I made a while ago... appropriate to locate burried stuff...
A challenge for you... can you guess what this is?

It's needlessly complex for its size so I'm guessing it's a scale model. Some kind of mine roller?

One option which I haven't seen mentioned is the use of retroreflective paint and a powerful spotlight. By lining up your eye with the beam, any exposed surface will light up like a Christmas tree. Using this principal I can easily spot tiny spiders from across my back yard, using a powerful LED torch to light up their eyes.
If nothing else, it might be a useful backup method of locating it... Can't hurt to try multiple systems of recovery.
Also, I hate to be the one to say it, but if you can't find a place to shoot it with absolute safety... Then don't fire it at all. As much as we all want results, it's not worth it to risk killing someone. Send it to another member if you can't pull it off.
