i believe the best well maybe not the best put a cheap option would be to pull apart a road flare.. they're designed to be seen from 2 nautical miles. maybe not out of as smaller holes as the ones in this but still. With a 3min fuse or something as mentioned before light it up put it in the barrel and hope for the best. As long as you don't shoot it with no tracking device.

It will almost be a shame to shoot this thing its so beautiful. When is the shot planned to take place or is it not planned yet. oh and won't customs or whatever pick this up if you try to ship it.

Yea they use metric, the actual round is 19mm, but it will be fired from 48ish mm barrel
It's 48.5mm according to MrCrowley... and it's bettter be right! sound neither imperial nor metric... must be a NZ thing...
or MrCrowley <s>boar</s> bore it himself :D

Incredible. That looks like it could be modded to house a wireless camera in the nose. Get a laptop with an amped antenna and you could record the flight of that bad boy and maybe aid in its recovery as well. It would go down in spudding history for sure.
You know what? The thought did cross my mind after seing that <s>sheep</s> cheap helmet camera! :D

In those troubled time, it's possible. Specially if the custom officer is a metal lover ;-) I plan to ship it in 2 separate parcels, maybe a little more expensive, but at least it will not look so lethal

I wish :D

I believe its 50mm nominal diameter with 6mm wall thickness (12mm in total). I think 50mm pressure rated PVC is usually about 55mm ID (if I recall correctly) but since this is ABS and has much thicker walls, the ID is less.

I am getting some aluminium tube for a different barrel but it'll only be a meter long and the ID is 44mm, so we should keep to the 48.5mm barrel due to its length and diameter.

Though contrary to popular belief...
But mrcrowley lives in NZ...Do they use metric pipe there?
My PVC pipe here is the same outside diameter as yours. A 50mm pressure rated fitting from NZ would fit 50mm pressure rated pipe from America. Wall thickness is different due to the range of pressure ratings we have compared to you guys but that only effects the inside diameter. You'll find the same in Australia too, not sure about Europe. :)

I wouldn't suggest a miniboy style projectile though, you want a longer flight time, so a parachute would be ideal - or what the heck,a spudgun launched glider ;)

Here's a little update. The sabot weigth about 50 grams right now.

Image

The 4 contact points have a diameter more closer to 49mm than 48.5mm. MrCrowley I'll let you flatten the edges and sand if necessary, better remove a bit of material later than be too small ;-) The disk should not touch, it's 48mm diameter.

The sabot is here in its cup sabot configuration. The large aluminum washer hold the petals together. It is still missing a top ring that I will insert in grooves and that will rigidify the whole stuff (mostly to avoid breaking, because I believe its rigid enough as it is for a successful shoot). I'm considering cutting a cone ring and make the grooves at and angle, so the ring will lock itself without any need of additional hardware, and possibly keep the sabot auto-centered when it exit the barrel, as a nice side effect. The angle grooves could also be used to insert a flat piece in each petal to help the separation in spindle sabot mode, when there's no washer that lock them together.

More fun to come :D

Yeah, with your cannon that thing is going to absolutely vanish.

EDIT: I bet the sabot alone flies farther than most advanced combustions are capable of sending something down range LOL.
