We've had some compititions on spudfiles, but the trouble always is maintaining some degree of fairness. Last year IIRC, there was a proposed damage contest that never got a chance because it was grossly biased and only wanted to allow PVC creations. I've got an idea that may make things a little fairer: we make three categories (hybrid, pneumatic, and combustion) depending on whether or not we get entries for each category there may be just two, or even one. We then choose a standard, easily obtained ammo such as a ball bearing or something. All shots must be on tape and capture the cannon in the shot. Last but not least, the cannon has to be brand new, AKA never showcased before
Any suggestions for any extra rules? Do y'all like these rules? Does this have potential to become a full blown competition?

I'm in. But my cannon has a 50mm porting so I would fire something a little bigger...

I still see the same problems with this. There isn't really much scope for innovation, we all know what gives good performance. Say you choose a standard projectile like a 3/8" "sling shot" bearing, those with access to HPA can demolish the pneumatic category with a long barrelled burst disk launcher, and the hybrid award goes to the guy with the strongest chamber and neighbours who don't mind sonic booms.
You will get some amazing footage, granted, but it wouldn't be a competition really, with all due respect most members would be left at the starting line.

Power / performance is a matter of money and who wants to spend the most. IMO, a contest of quality and design would serve the members better.

Agreed. I like the idea of awarding quality and thoughtfulness that goes into the build. The amount of care taken on the small details as well as on making a well working cannon. Also creativity in the design is always fun to take notice of and can be awarded. The cannon doesn't have to blow through 6 feet of cinder block to be a good cannon. If anything I say we have a "wow thats a cool cannon" voting event.velocity3x wrote:Power / performance is a matter of money and who wants to spend the most. I agree with the above, maybe a contest for just the all around best cannon, chosen on looks, power, function, innovation. Then in that contest maybe two categories, machined and off the self parts.
That is all.

So as aposed to the innovative contest, we have an aesthetic compitition? I'd be game for that, the artist in me was around before I ever made anything gun related, I think I could churn out something nice

Agreed with clemsonguy, an all around cannon contest would be cool but in a machined and off the shelf parts category.

We'd have to set some standards for what differentiates the two. Drilling additional holes and tapping holes for fittings technically qualifies for 'custom machining' so we'll need some requisites for a cannon to fit in a categoryGun Freak wrote:Agreed with clemsonguy, an all around cannon contest would be cool but in a machined and off the shelf parts category.

I think any work that has not been posted should be allowed, and if we decided to do the best all around cannon that hasnt been posted, the deadline should not be for at least a couple months. Maybe the deadline could be midnight december 31, 2011.
That is all.

Oh sure, then noone will be around to see who won once 2012 hits. Great idea.clemsonguy1125 wrote:I think any work that has not been posted should be allowed, and if we decided to do the best all around cannon that hasnt been posted, the deadline should not be for at least a couple months.
