I really hope this thread causes some kinda of googlebomb effect for people who are searching for actual cake recipes.
They'll find out how dangerous baking and eating cake really is, and their children will never have a birthday party again.
So, carry on.

I assume you are working to make a smoke trail? Hopefully you aren't going to rely on the location of a loud report upon impact for locating the little guy. Be careful your experiment doesn't expend itself in the barrel upon ignition.

doubt they use that because it will reduce the range of mini.

... but streamers produce so much drag that they are used as
rocket recovery systems, so all that effort to make an aerodynamic projectile effectively spirals into the drain.

Another thing. In case you don't find it, Put some big lettering on it to inform the "civilian" finder that this was part of a science experiment, to mark where it was found, and to call/email XYZ.
You could also offer a small reward (~$10 or something).

i siad that earlier in the thread same as Fnord, i still think you might as well do it not going to cost anything but might give a chance of you getting it back, you should also add something about the finder to remember where they found it.

Yeah, I was thinking about that last time it was mentioned. It could be a bit hard to say "please take note of any landmarks in the general area where the projectile was found so that the location can be narrowed down to within ~100m or so"
It's a good idea and I'll probably do it regardless, just need to sort out the wording.

They could shove a stick in the ground or something. It just has to last until they call you and you drop whatever you're doing and go take GPS coordinates.

Okay so I will definitely cook either Wednesday or Thursday and take it down to the beach for testing. After this week, I'm busy studying for/sitting exams until the 14th. Apparently we might be going up to the beach the following Monday (21st) so I have a week to fibreglass the barrel and sort out any electronics for the projectile.
I guess we're stuck with using a mercury switch to ignite the cake upon impact or igniting the cake in the barrel prior to launch. I prefer the latter option since I can be sure the smoke will ignite and it might be easier to find the landing zone when a spotter is in place.

Surely that's going to be inconvenient at best, I wouldn't fancy it...

A pyrotechnic impact fuse is easy to put together, all you need is... fuçk it, there's no way I have time to put this in baking terms

I'm not worried about ignition upon impact as much as whether or not the smoke will be sufficiently visible after seeping through the sand.
