[Question] How far would a marshmallow go..?
Say at...90-110 psi?
Or would it be better to fit a different sized barrel and use a smaller/more dense material for ammunition.
Keep in mind that using marshmallows was initially used so on contact with human skin (covered by a jumper) it would sting, but not cause serious injury. (from a distance, obviously)
So spudfiles, how far would it go/is there better ammunition?

... is like asking "Is there a better form of transport than lying face down wearing a sandpaper suit and propelling yourself by blowing vigourously?"stoj wrote:is there better ammunition?
Have a read through this thread to get an idea of what counts for decent range.
The question you should ask first though is, what do you want to achieve?

I'm aware of the stupidity of the quote when extracted from the whole post; however, I'm trying to achieve decent velocity and displacement. What I meant by that was, is there 'softer' ammunition that still travels a significant range?
At what velocity does it start to become unbearable - pain wise?
(ps. ty for the link)

removes the 'shove anything down the barrel' novelty of a larger barrel
plus might aswell just buy an airsoft rifle.

...not if you stuff a handful of airsoft BBs down itstoj wrote:removes the 'shove anything down the barrel' novelty of a larger barrel
If you want to step up, paintballs.
In any case, the question still stands - what do you want to hit and from how far away?

On the odd occasion, random things in the distance.
But mainly...people. From as far as possible using 90-100 psi (i have a portable air compressor that hooks up to my car that maxes out at this)
I wonder if these would break in the barrel?

General rule of thumb when it comes to shooting people with homemade cannons (which is not allowed on this forum except for airsoft discussion): the power it takes to fire what-ever-you-are-shooting a reasonable distance is too much power for a person to take a hit at close range.stoj wrote:Keep in mind that using marshmallows was initially used so on contact with human skin (covered by a jumper) it would sting, but not cause serious injury. I realise you may intend to only hit people with marshmallows, or a similar projectile, at a lengthy distance but you have to be prepared for the scenario where someone accidentally takes a hit at close range. The only way to avoid this is by shooting small, light projectiles (AKA airsoft BBs) or to have a crap performing cannon that barely lobs a marshmallow 30' compared to a cannon that can fire a marshmallow out 30' with a straight trajectory.
If we ignore the rules and pretend you're not going to be shooting anyone for the sake of discussion, I'll just add that you shouldn't shoot anyone at any range until you've taken a point blank shot yourself (I'm only talking about marshmallows here, don't go shooting yourself with anything harder) to the thigh or similar fleshy area and make sure everyone is wearing necessary protective gear (face masks, etc.).
I wouldn't want to be hit by a marshmallow with 90PSI behind it at point blank range from a cannon I've built, so I would say it isn't a very smart idea.
And also, I sure as hell hope your intended targets will be willing and able, rather than this being some kind of prank. I may be underestimating your intelligence, but I feel obliged to at least make that point.
Be careful.

I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be without sponges.
Right now I'm having amnesia and deja vu at the same time. I think I've forgotten this before.

At about 20 feet a nice soft full size marshmallow will put dents in a car at about 100 PSI. Marshmallows are not very aerodynamic. They only fly a couple hundred feet at the most.
This dent is from a marshmallow.

good god that deals some damage. i saw the video coupled with that car door dent but I wasn't sure what psi he had it at.
i think splatballs are the go here. (BBs will be far too cumbersome to load bolt action style imo)
if they break on firing process i'll have to wad the chamber somehow.

fair enough, minimum-distance 'rules' would have to be in place.MrCrowley wrote:stoj wrote:At what velocity does it start to become unbearable - pain wise?General rule of thumb when it comes to shooting people with homemade cannons (which is not allowed on this forum except for airsoft discussion): the power it takes to fire what-ever-you-are-shooting a reasonable distance is too much power for a person to take a hit at close range.stoj wrote:Keep in mind that using marshmallows was initially used so on contact with human skin (covered by a jumper) it would sting, but not cause serious injury. I suggest tests against layered cardboard box'o'truth style before even attempting to fire at a sentient target.
