Little question. Today I found a small vacuum cleaner in a garbabe, grabbed it, took it home and plugged it in, and it worked. So I ripped it apart and got the motor out of it It will be used for something cool but I'm not telling yet I took the two wires connecting the motor off, the kind that slips on easily, and I'm wondering if the motor will function no matter which prong I put the two wires on, if it just switches the direction of the motor, or whatever. Thanks.

If you can get the actual vaccuum pump off the motor you can make a compressed air turbine like this one:

Lol, I ripped the crap out of the vacuum pump to get the motor faceplate. Didn't need anything else for what I'm building.

I've heard that many of the attempts to build super-efficient cars were... um... disliked by the oil corporations. That's probably why there aren't many super-efficient, normal-looking cars available today.POLAND_SPUD wrote:Isn't it possible to build a very efficient car that looks (more or less) like a normal car?
For example, this book was removed from the shelves in the 80's because it contained information on super-efficient carburetors that the oil companies didn't like. (It's a big .pdf, but it contains a lot of neat information on the subject.)

On a more realistic note - look into some of these creations. http://students.sae.org/competitions/supermileage/

Thing is, what is a "normal" car?Isn't it possible to build a very efficient car that looks (more or less) like a normal car
I mean, this was pretty normal 100 years ago:
An efficient car is going to have to be aerodynamic, and unfortunately that means long, narrow and streamlined with no protrusions if you're going for the ultimate.
If current car shapes are what people are willing to accept, then the only avenues for bettering efficiency are less thirsty engines and lighter materials, meaning only small percentage improvements.

@JSR
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automobile ... oefficient
This thing scores better than toyota prius as far as cd value is concerned
and the first prototype was produced in 1933
anyway I don't know much on this so let me quote someone who does
Cd of 0.195
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Motors_EV1
but no they couldn't just put a nice efficient gas engine in it.... it's 100% electric

exagerating as always...I mean, this was pretty normal 100 years ago:

See this ?The current automotive fashion is for manufacturers to pay only lip service to aerodynamics. In fact, there has been little improvement in CdA figures in the last decade. However, at highway speeds, most of the power being developed by the engine is being used to push air out of the way. For cars of the future to improve their open road fuel consumption, CdA figures will have to once again fall: it is simply a physical requirement of efficient car design.

That's the point I was making - we know (and looking at cars in the interwar period, have known for a long time) what it takes to make an aerodynamic cars, the stumbling block is getting the general public to accept it. Until that happens, the only way you can get better efficiency is by making lighter cars with lower consumption engines.POLAND_SPUD wrote:The current automotive fashion is for manufacturers to pay only lip service to aerodynamics. I for one would applaud a return to thirties styling, who wouldn't want a bike like this?

I wouldn't say it is really such a big deal. You can build a fairly nice looking car that is very aerodynamic, just look at that GM EV1 above
What I don't understand is why this is limited to electric cars or hybrids only?
'Yo dawg I heard you're rich so we made a car that costs 35 000$ so now you can save 15% on fuel'

Fairly obvious - conventional engines have a very good power to weight ratio compared to electric or hybrid power trains, so there isn't the same compulsion to make the most of the available energy for comparable performance.POLAND_SPUD wrote:What I don't understand is why this is limited to electric cars or hybrids only?
Take the EV1 and put an equivalent horsepower gasoline engine and it will squat over an defecate into the electric version in terms of performance.

I knew I hadn't got it from 4chan, Encyclopedia Dramatica wouldn't have it, and I don't frequent other sites of that ilk, I was quite puzzled.
At least it's been posted again
