If you want proof, here you go.

It's a stripped-down Opel T1 that got 376 MPG in a 1973 competition. It accomplished this feat by vaporizing the fuel before it entered the engine, a method similar to those found in the book I mentioned. If the car weren't stripped down, it would still probably get more than 100 mpg.

To JSR and Poland_Spud:
Sorry that it isn't thirties styling, but I think the MPGs make up for the loss in classiness.

Stupid electricity... pneumatics rule.
I just shocked myself with 120 volts playing with the vacuum motor. I was trying to figure out how to get rid of two wires that didn't power the motor, but I left the power plug in one time and touched a contact, and got zapped. Hopefully I can start my secret project this weekend... 8)

What I don't understand is why this is limited to electric cars or hybrids only?

Do the math. Figure getting 150K miles from a car.
At 30 MPG that would be 5,000 gallons of gas.
At 45 MPG that would be 3,333 gallons.
Figure the cost difference at your projected prices.
At an average of $3.50 per gallon, the fuel price difference would be $5,834.
When I bought my Prius I sold a Mustang. I got much better than a 15% improvement. The extra cost of a used Prius has been paid back several times in savings. My savings is close to $18,000. My car cost $18,000.

Some cars are overpriced and you won't save much if you keep it for only 3-5 years.

Figure getting 150K miles from a car.

That's even a conservative estimate, as I'm discovering. My dad has put over 160,000 miles on a 2000 Toyota Avalon, the most significant repair it's needed yet is a replaced front strut, but beyond that regular maintenance and a lack of reckless driving have so far kept it on the road and running.

I find Japanese cars are great for heavy usage, probably why they're so popular down here. We had a 1996 Honda Accord that did about 160,000 miles as well, no significant repairs except for when it was involved in a minor car accident and the front bumper was replaced and some metal bent back in to shape.

My friend had a Mitsubishi Diamante which would've done close to 200,000 miles before they sold it.

Other cars my family has owned in recent times include a 2001 Ford Escape which has been a minor nightmare every few years from leaking brake fluid to a faulty transmission but apart from that been alright and about a year ago we got a second hand 2008 BMW or something which hasn't had any faults as of yet.

I wouldn't buy a European car unless I had a lot of money, even the cheap ones regularly cost more than they're worth to fix since we're so far away from Europe down here. Actually, I'd buy a Jap import European car, usually you can find parts for them at a reasonable price.

I still think you can get a lot of life out of some of the American made cars. I have 173,000 on my 2000 sable and my father has an 86 chevy with 210,000 and they still are used pretty regularly.

When cleaning out your ears, its best to not use a q-tip. Instead, drip some warm water or rubbing alcohol in your ears, let it sit for a few seconds, and then tilt your head so it runs out. Q-tips can just push earwax farther back into your ear canal, potentially damaging your eardrum
