Strictly speaking, what you're describing isn't a sabot but rather a "pusher plate". Albeit an oddly shaped one.jackssmirkingrevenge wrote:I've been having a play with milled collars to turn small masonry nails into stable darts without any modification of the nail itself. In 6mm calibre, a simple airsoft BB serves as a sabot.

Fair point.jor2daje wrote:I know its not terribly accurate, but if its strong enough to mill afterwards, you can print oversize and mill important features down, much like a casting.
Certainly an interesting project. I was thinking of selling out and purchasing their own upgrade thoughhaha ya, little too expensive for a starving college student. I like the $100 board and $30 for 4 steppers, make my own mounts and couplings alot more than couple hundred maybe 1k for their kits.
Bah, semantics technically this is a sabot:Strictly speaking, what you're describing isn't a sabot but rather a "pusher plate".
In 6mm it's convenient, lightweight, low friction, cheap and strong enough for the job at handAlbeit an oddly shaped one.

hehe very true, instead of pausing to allow time for the accessories to pay for themselves I've just been buying more but for now at least I feel my setup is "complete", I/we have a few projects in the pipeline with commercial potential so it's all goodjor2daje wrote:haha thats because LeMaudit has been brainwashing you, soon you'll be a sherline salesman too.

I would be interested in buying a few, my only problem is I wouldn't be able to get them very easily. Plus I don't have a pneumatic that is strong enough to shoot them with accuracy.

Was hoping either you or Labtec would spot thatBrian the brain wrote:
The whole point of these rounds is that they are relatively light but with high sectional density compared to full bore projectiles, so they can perform well even in relatively weak launchers.I would be interested in buying a few, my only problem is I wouldn't be able to get them very easily. I'm half tempted to build a marble calibre 1x combustion to prove a point...

If absolute accuracy was required, projectiles would have to be extremely uniform and therefore more expensive, casting would definitely be the route to take.al-xg wrote:A stable aerodynamic projectile is useful where other projectiles loose accuracy and stability in high powered launchers.

Spotted that, but i'm not tight, i'm "zuunig"Was hoping either you or Labtec would spot that
About the projectiles, couldn't you make them in a way the nail wouldn't stop penetrating the target because the fins are stopping it?

If you're prepared to cut the head off the nail, sure and it's even better for CG!Labtecpower wrote:About the projectiles, couldn't you make them in a way the nail wouldn't stop penetrating the target because the fins are stopping it?

(there was a separate polycarbonate sheet between the housing and the target btw )

Very nice
I might try to make one of these today, I have some large nails lying around. Shot from the mini hybrid they should do some damage

Vaguely related, a few "heavy" darts I cooked up for a possible future co-op project:
For scale, penetrator diameter is 8mm. More details eventually.
