Crna, what are you thinking lathe material wise?

I've got a Cert III in lab skills, it's a year long course, two nights a week, piss easy. I'm doing the Cert IV next year, one night a week.

At the TAFE I'm at, everyone who's done the Cert IV has got a job, it's possibly te best value course around.

I'll try and get a sampling job at the mine at Heathcote, if you're mechanically minded then you'll have no trouble working process. On the go repairs are quite regular.

Crna, since I believe you're going for a metal lathe, would you like Dave Gingery's books on making a lathe & mill? The offer's open for anyone.

There's a lot of casting involved, and you'll need access to a lathe and mill to complete it.

By the way I found a nice 2" chuck from harbor freight that would work for 35 bucks, not too big, but can hold bigger stuff than a drill chuck. May be difficult to mount though.

You can get spindles separate to match that chuck, then build the head stock around that...just a thought.

Thick wood base around 60mm and 30x30x5 RHS for the rails the tool rest and tail stock would ride on. So far the only all thread I can get for the lead screw is M12 and that to fine so would move very slowly.

the head stock would be wood as well around 100mm thick. for the spindle i have a few 20mm id 30mm od bearings i would drill a hole in the head stock and line up as many as i can 3 should fit in a 100mm. This wont sound good for the engineers out there but i would then weld the shaft to the last two bearings and some how attach a chuck that.

@Zeus, ahh i thought you where a fitter or tool maker. I need to start doing a welding course because for some stupid reason they took it out of the curriculum for the fitting and turning course(Cert III in Engineering - Mechanical Trade), not that bad though i would have gone for the ticket anyway.

You should use pipe as a spindle so you have a hole clean through the head stock for working on longer pieces. What ever the bearings will allow.

Crna, my lead screw will be 5/16 threaded rod, I don't really care if it will move slowly. My headstock is a skate wheel mounted with wood inside a PVC fitting and it has two bearings that fit 5/16 threaded rod that I'm gonna try to attach the chuck to the motor with.
