Big chambers take a long time to combust, even with multiple fans and sparkers to speed things up. Nah, the combustion in this case is very fast... But the barrel is very long and the accelerations are pretty damned low (I suspect they're survivable by a human). Combine long barrel with low acceleration and yeah, it takes a while to clear the muzzle.

Yeah, it's steam driven... But it uses burst disks to control the steam. It's very much a hybrid spud gun on steroids. But where most use combustion to heat nitrogen (inert air components), this one uses combustion to heat water (it's easier to store X pounds of water in a small space than it is to store X pounds of nitrogen in that same small space).

Right, some quick research later:
Complex but I understand the compactness advantages vis a vis a pneumatic launch.
The missiles are ejected from their tubes by igniting an explosive charge in a separate container which is separated by seventeen titanium alloy pinnacles activated by a double alloy steam system. The energy from the blast is directed to a water tank, which is flash-vaporized to steam. The subsequent pressure spike is strong enough to eject the missile out of the tube and give it enough momentum to reach and clear the surface of the water.

This year has been one hell of a year.
Friday I learned that starting tomorrow my domain will be a bit larger than it has in the past. They're adding this place to the list of facilities that I run. It actually makes a bit of sense as it was an "island" inside of my larger facility, but now the island will be mine too.
The good news: I'll have access to 600 HP worth of 3,000 psi air compressors.
The bad news: I can't exactly put them in the back of my truck and borrow them for the weekend.
